The Role

We are looking for a Full Stack Engineer who will take ownership of building and improving the Case AI platform — the intelligent engine behind our legal service delivery. You will work across the entire stack, from designing resilient cloud infrastructure on AWS to crafting intuitive interfaces that lawyers and clients interact with daily.

This is a hands‑on engineering role with real product ownership. You will collaborate closely with legal professionals, understand how legal workflows translate to software requirements, and ship features that directly improve client outcomes. Security, data integrity, and audit‑readiness are not afterthoughts here — they are engineering requirements given the nature of legal data we handle.

What You Will Do

Case AI Platform Development

• Design and build features across the Case AI platform, including document ingestion, AI-assisted drafting workflows, case management, and client‑facing portals.
• Integrate and maintain connections to multiple LLM providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, and open‑source models), implementing provider routing logic, fallback handling, and response normalization.
• Develop robust document processing pipelines: extraction, chunking, embedding, retrieval, and generation across legal document types (contracts, court filings, corporate instruments).
• Own the tool‑calling and agentic workflow layer — designing multi‑step AI workflows that can research, draft, review, and revise legal content with appropriate human‑in‑the‑loop checkpoints.
• Build and maintain an internal model evaluation framework to benchmark LLM output quality on legal tasks across dimensions such as accuracy, citation quality, tone, and jurisdiction‑awareness.
• Architect and manage production infrastructure on AWS — including compute (ECS/EKS or Lambda), storage (S3, RDS/Aurora, DynamoDB), messaging (SQS/SNS), and CDN/networking layers.
• Implement infrastructure‑as‑code using Terraform or AWS CDK; maintain reproducible, version‑controlled environments across dev, staging, and production.
• Design for scalability and cost efficiency; profile workloads, right‑size resources, and implement autoscaling strategies appropriate for bursty LLM inference loads.
• Set up and maintain observability stacks (CloudWatch, distributed tracing, structured logging, alerting) to ensure production reliability and fast incident response.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to engineering standards, code review culture, and shared tooling.

Security & Compliance

• Take ownership of the platform's security posture: threat modeling, dependency scanning, secret management (AWS Secrets Manager / Parameter Store), and least‑privilege IAM design.
• Implement encryption at rest and in transit for all client data; enforce data residency and tenant isolation requirements across a multi‑jurisdiction client base.
• Maintain detailed audit logs suitable for legal and regulatory review; design systems that make it straightforward to respond to data subject access or deletion requests.
• Conduct and remediate findings from periodic security reviews; stay current with relevant compliance frameworks (SOC 2, ISO 27001) as the company prepares for certification.
• Work directly with lawyers and legal operations staff to understand workflows, identify friction points, and translate requirements into engineering specifications.
• Participate in product planning discussions, contribute technical feasibility input, and help the team make informed trade‑offs between speed and correctness.
• Write clear technical documentation — architecture decision records, API contracts, runbooks — in professional English for internal and external audiences.

What We're Looking For

Required

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 2 years in a full stack capacity (strong backend bias is fine).
• Solid proficiency in one or more of Python, TypeScript/Node.js, or Go for backend services; comfort with React or a comparable framework on the frontend.
• Hands‑on AWS experience across core services: IAM, VPC, EC2/ECS/Lambda, RDS, S3, CloudFront, and at minimum one managed AI/ML service (Bedrock, SageMaker, or equivalent).
• Demonstrated understanding of application security fundamentals: OWASP Top 10, secrets management, authentication/authorization patterns (OAuth 2.0, JWT, mTLS), and secure coding practices.
• Experience designing and operating production‑grade REST or GraphQL APIs, including versioning, rate limiting, and observability.
• Strong written English — able to produce clear technical documentation, write precise specifications, and communicate complex trade‑offs in prose without ambiguity.

Strongly Preferred

• Experience building applications that integrate with large language model APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, or open‑source models via Ollama/vLLM); familiarity with prompt engineering, function/tool calling, and RAG architectures.
• Background in legal tech, regulated industries (financial services, healthcare), or any domain where data accuracy, auditability, and compliance are first‑class concerns.
• AWS certifications (Solutions Architect – Associate or Professional, Security Specialty, or DevOps Engineer) are a positive signal, though not a gate.
• Familiarity with vector databases (pgvector, Pinecone, Weaviate) and document extraction tooling (Apache Tika, Unstructured, or similar).
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, AWS CodePipeline) and container orchestration (ECS Fargate, EKS).

Because Milliard Law's clients and legal output are primarily in English, and because our platform must produce professional‑grade legal text, English proficiency is a genuine working requirement — not a formality.
