The APAC-based position will work with editors and correspondents worldwide and be part of the Technology Team on the Business Desk.

The New York Times is looking for a talented, experienced and versatile reporter to join our Business team to cover technology in Asia. The contest between the United States and China for technological supremacy – spanning artificial intelligence, semiconductors, robotics and other emerging fields – is one of the defining stories of our time. We are looking for a journalist who can break news from companies and governments across Asia and translate complex technical developments into clear and compelling journalism for a broad audience. A firm understanding of the geopolitical context to technology is necessary. China will be central to the beat, reflecting its importance to the region and the global economy.

The ideal candidate is an energetic and determined beat reporter who thrives on competition and ambitious storytelling. The role calls for a rich mix of scoops, breaking news, analysis, explainers and enterprise reporting that reveals the forces reshaping technology, business and geopolitics. Although the reporting will begin in Asia, stories must draw wider global connections. The reporter will work closely with correspondents around the world and collaborate across Business, International, Breaking News, Video and Graphics, contributing to articles, live coverage, newsletters, audio, visual journalism and other formats.

This role will be based in the APAC region; the location of the role will be discussed with the recruiter during the interview process. The role will be part of the Technology Team on the Business Desk.

Main Responsibilities

• Follow news, events and cultural trends on your beat to determine, in conjunction with your colleagues and editors, themes worthy of coverage as breaking news, day news or as enterprise
• Must be as comfortable and enthusiastic reacting to immediate breaking news as you are writing thoughtfully and deeply about events and issues
• Write medium- and long-term enterprise and the occasional entertaining feature.
• Deliver scoops and exclusive news
• Build a network of sources that will inform rich and original news articles and features
• Contribute to and sometimes be the lead correspondent on live briefings, writing briefing-length stories and providing live coverage
• Cover news accurately and efficiently; maintain and cultivate news sources and contacts; obtain information through interviews, observations and research
• Present facts and analysis in clear written form and in conformity with Times style, length and other requirements, and developing high-impact stories from the broader themes that underpin incremental news developments
• Write on deadline; receive and react to feedback and edits
• Collaborate closely and regularly with reporter-researchers who are partners in reporting, translation and story scouting
• Commit to The New York Times’s strategy, ethics, standards and mission for both themselves, their team, stringers and colleagues
• Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world
