Job summary

Barclays is seeking an Assistant Vice President – Software Engineer in Hong Kong to design, develop and improve software delivering business, platform, and technology capabilities. Qualifications

  • Experience in full-stack engineering: Java/Spring Boot backend; Angular frontend.
  • Strong SQL/Oracle/MS SQL and OpenShift/container/Linux/Git experience.
  • Strong OO design and refactoring with Agile/Scrum and TDD.
  • SBL/Equity Finance domain experience including borrowing/lending workflows, recalls, returns, marks, collateral, booking flows, and vendor gateway interactions.
  • Working knowledge of Capital Markets and Front Office trading processes.
  • Ability to operate under pressure with traders and senior stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; diagnose production issues quickly.
  • Excellent communication, able to explain technology to business.

Responsibilities

  • Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions using industry languages, frameworks, and tools; ensure scalable, maintainable code.
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineers to define requirements and align with business objectives.

Job description

Essential Skills / Basic Qualifications
  • Experience in full‑Stack Engineering - Backend: Java, Spring Boot, REST microservices ; Frontend: Angular, HTML/CSS/TypeScript
  • Experience in Database: SQL (Oracle/MS SQL) and advanced query optimization ; Cloud‑native delivery: OpenShift, containers, Linux and Git
  • Strong understanding of OO design principles and ability to refactor complex systems with experience working in Agile/Scrum with test‑driven development
  • SBL / Equity Finance experience, including borrowing/lending workflows, recalls, returns, marks, collateral, booking flows, lifecycle events, and vendor gateway interactions
  • Working knowledge of broader Capital Markets and Front Office trading processes
  • Ability to operate in high‑pressure environments with traders and senior stakeholders
  • Strong analytical & problem‑solving skills; ability to quickly diagnose production issues and deliver tactical + strategic fixes
  • Excellent communication—comfortable explaining technology to business and vice‑versa
Desirable Skills / Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with event‑driven architectures, caching patterns, messaging (Kafka/Solace)
  • Exposure to workflow automation, inventory optimization, or funding optimization models
  • Experience with DevOps, containers, observability tooling, and scalable distributed systems
  • Knowledge of Prime Financing ecosystem

Purpose of the role

To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues.

Accountabilities
  • Development and delivery of high‑quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
  • Cross‑functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
  • Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
  • Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
  • Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
  • Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.
Assistant Vice President Expectations
