About the Role
We are looking for an experienced AI Engineering Manager to lead the development, enhancement and modernisation of our core life insurance administration platform and drive the delivery of AI‑powered applications and agents that automate real business workflows.
This is a hands‑on technical leadership and people‑management role. You will lead an engineering team responsible for software design and delivery across policy onboarding, administration, servicing, premiums, claims, transactions and reporting. You will also identify and prioritise opportunities to apply AI to improve operational efficiency, accuracy, customer experience and business scalability.
You will set the technical direction, establish engineering and AI‑governance standards, allocate resources, manage delivery priorities, and remain directly involved in architecture, code review, testing and complex problem‑solving where required. Working closely with business leaders, users, vendors and other stakeholders, you will translate operational requirements into reliable, secure and scalable technology solutions and take overall accountability from initial requirements through production deployment and continuous improvement.
What You’ll Do
- Lead the engineering team: Manage, coach and develop software developers and other technical contributors; allocate work, set expectations, review performance and build a collaborative, accountable and high‑performing engineering culture.
- Own the engineering roadmap: Work with business and technology stakeholders to define priorities, delivery milestones, resource requirements and technical dependencies for core‑platform modernisation and AI development.
- Lead core insurance‑platform development: Take technical ownership of the core administration platform supporting policy onboarding, administration, premiums, claims, transactions, servicing and reporting.
- Lead AI solution and agent development: Identify, prioritise and oversee the development of AI agents and workflows that use language models, business data and enterprise tools to complete real business tasks, with appropriate guardrails and human review.
- Set technical architecture and engineering standards: Establish and maintain standards for application architecture, APIs, databases, integrations, coding, testing, documentation, security, maintainability and production support.
- Manage end‑to‑end delivery: Lead projects from requirements analysis and solution design through development, testing, deployment, production support and continuous improvement, ensuring delivery against agreed scope, quality and business outcomes.
- Lead data integration and migration: Oversee integration with legacy insurance systems, third‑party APIs and customer‑facing applications, ensuring that data migration, validation, reconciliation and exception handling are completed accurately and securely.
- Drive responsible AI‑assisted development: Establish effective and controlled use of AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or similar platforms. Ensure that AI‑generated designs and code are independently reviewed, tested, secured and approved before production release.
- Ensure production quality, resilience and security: Take accountability for system availability, performance, scalability, data protection, cybersecurity and production quality, particularly where customer, policy, claims and financial data are involved.
- Establish AI governance and evaluation practices: Define appropriate approaches to model selection, testing, evaluation, monitoring, access control, human oversight and escalation for production AI applications.
- Manage technical risks and dependencies: Identify architectural, security, data, delivery and operational risks; establish mitigation plans; and elevate material issues to relevant stakeholders promptly.
- Partner with business stakeholders: Work directly with insurance operations and other business functions to understand process pain points, evaluate requirements, prioritise development and convert business needs into practical technology solutions.
- Manage vendors and external developers: Coordinate external technology providers and development partners where applicable, ensuring that deliverables meet agreed technical, security, quality and documentation standards.
- Drive continuous innovation: Evaluate emerging AI, software and cloud technologies and recommend practical applications that improve customer experience, productivity, control effectiveness and business scalability.
- Support broader technology priorities: Provide technical leadership for customer portals, internal tools, reporting solutions, cloud infrastructure and other strategic technology initiatives as business requirements evolve.
What You’ll Bring
- Proven engineering leadership experience, including managing or leading developers, assigning work, reviewing technical performance, resolving delivery issues and developing team capability.
- Strong system‑design and architecture capability, with experience making technical decisions concerning applications, integrations, data, security, scalability and maintainability.
- Hands‑on AI engineering experience, including LLM APIs, tool calling, structured outputs, retrieval techniques, AI or agent workflows, and evaluation of accuracy, reliability and business suitability.
- Strong experience with AI‑assisted software development, using Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or similar tools, together with the judgment to validate, test, secure and improve AI‑generated code.
- End‑to‑end delivery experience, with a track record of taking complex systems from requirements and architecture through implementation, testing, deployment, production support and continuous improvement.
- Experience managing production systems, including incident resolution, root‑cause analysis, monitoring, performance improvement, release management and technical‑debt prioritisation.
- Strong problem‑solving and ownership mindset, with the ability to make sound technical decisions, manage ambiguity, resolve complex issues and remain accountable for outcomes.
- Effective project and priority‑management skills, with the ability to balance platform modernisation, AI development, production support and changing business requirements.
- Strong stakeholder‑management and communication skills, with the ability to explain technical matters clearly to non‑technical colleagues and translate business requirements into realistic technology plans.
- Demonstrated coaching and people‑development capability, with the ability to provide constructive feedback, promote engineering discipline and create an environment of continuous learning.
- Commitment to responsible AI and secure engineering, particularly when handling sensitive customer, policy, claims and financial information.
Nice to Have
- Experience with life insurance or financial‑services systems, particularly policy administration, onboarding, premiums, claims, investment‑linked products, customer servicing, transactions or regulatory reporting.
- Experience leading the modernisation of legacy applications, including system integration, platform replacement, data migration, validation and reconciliation.
- Experience implementing production AI practices covering retrieval, evaluation frameworks, guardrails, observability, monitoring and human‑in‑the‑loop approvals.
- Cloud architecture, deployment and operational experience using Microsoft Azure, Docker and CI/CD pipelines, or comparable technologies.
- Front‑end development experience using React, Vue or Flutter, particularly for customer applications, internal dashboards or business tools.
- Experience managing external developers, technology vendors or outsourced delivery teams.
- Knowledge of information security, privacy, data governance and responsible‑AI requirements relevant to insurance or financial‑services organisations.
- Experience establishing engineering metrics, release controls, incident‑management practices and technical documentation standards.
- Relevant degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science or a related discipline.
