Job description
Overview

We are looking for enthusiastic and highly motivated Band 6 Radiographers to join the Cross Sectional Team at WWL Teaching Hospitals on a fixed term 12 month contract to cover maternity leaves.

The post is for 37.5 hours per week, with part time hours considered. The role requires a flexible approach to working hours across 7 days, including evenings, weekends, nights, stand-by and across multiple sites.

WWL offers cross sectional imaging across 3 sites: Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals, including the Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) at Leigh Infirmary. The portfolio includes 4 Siemens CT scanners and 3 Siemens MRI 1.5T wide bore scanners across all sites and a new 3T MRI at the Wrightington site in 2025.

You must have proven experience of an extensive range of MRI and/or CT procedures and a demonstrable high level of MRI and/or CT scanning knowledge. It is essential to have recent NHS experience. Evidence of ongoing CPD activities incorporating current advances in both CT and MRI.

The role will require you to work across all areas in the Trust including those designated as positive, asymptomatic and negative COVID wards.

The successful post holder will:

  • Perform such duties as will assist in the provision of an effective and efficient diagnostic imaging service, primarily within CT and MRI.
  • Undertake interchangeable working between the MRI and CT departments following completion of the relevant in-house training programmes, demonstrating a flexible approach to work, in line with the requirements of future service developments and expansion of services.
  • Participate in the out of hours CT standby service to cover the CT night service in the event of unplanned sickness.
  • Work flexible hours to meet the demands of the service across 7 days and multiple sites, including night shift rotation.
  • Work within the CT/MRI department, providing leadership and training to more junior staff.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • BSc in Diagnostic Radiography or a Diploma of the College of Radiographers (Diagnostic).
  • Keep evidence of an up-to-date record of CPD and necessary training within a portfolio.
  • Sound generic Post Graduate experience.
  • Completion of in-house training programme for CT and/or MRI scanning, including practical and theoretical aspects of the CT/MRI scanner and related equipment.
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of cross-sectional anatomy.
  • Receptive to future role development to allow further improvement and expansion.
  • Intravenous Injection Certificate is desirable. If not, willingness to undertake this training is required.
  • Competence in the use of accessory equipment such as oxygen and suction machines and resuscitation equipment.

Key results from the job holder

  • To perform unsupervised radiography and MRI/CT scanning as required.
  • To perform a wide range of CT/MRI scanning techniques.
  • To ensure high standards of image quality for conventional Radiography and CT/MRI.
  • Exercise judgement to assess patient condition and amend technique/protocol as needed.
  • Critically appraise the technical quality and diagnostic value of CT/MRI images and determine need for further imaging before reporting.
  • To deputise for the Band 7 Radiographers and undertake leadership responsibilities as designated.
  • To have a flexible approach to work and adapt to service needs as they arise.
  • To participate in the standby rota for CT for unplanned sickness during the night to enable service continuity.
  • To be responsible for the care of patients attending for diagnostic imaging and for the radiation dose received during CT examinations.
  • To ensure MR safety of staff, patients and visitors to the MRI department and observe Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2000.
  • To report all equipment faults.
  • Conduct oneself in a professional manner.
  • Be flexible to changes in service demands and undertake a range of duties including intravenous injections, management responsibilities, site coordination, image interpretation, QA involvement, student training, and first aider duties as required.

Planning and Organisational Duties

  • Plan and prioritise own workload with consideration of clinical and service needs.
  • Prioritise the department workload and respond to emergency/urgent patients.
  • Maintain quality control procedures and coordinate portering and patient appointment systems.
  • Provide cover for colleagues as directed by the line manager and become familiar with departmental resources.
Communication and Relationships
  • Demonstrate empathy and understanding to patients who are terminally or seriously ill and communicate highly complex information.
  • Negotiate with the MDT to arrange scans and ensure efficient workflow.
  • Assist and advise clinicians, wards and departments on IRMER 2000, IRR99 and on PACS administration.
Health & Safety, Teaching and Professional Development
  • Compliance with Trust policies, mandatory training and code of conduct.
  • Support induction processes and supervise junior staff; contribute to CPD and in-house training for CT/MRI.
  • Support training and supervision of student radiographers.
Work Circumstances & On-call
  • CT department with exposure to high dose radiation; MRI safety requirements; occasional exposure to bodily fluids and infections.
  • CT standby duties including lone night work for emergencies.
  • Manual handling and cross-infection control requirements.
Physical, Mental & Emotional Demands
  • High level of dexterity and coordination for positioning and imaging; keyboard skills; imaging interpretation.
  • Frequent exposure to emotionally distressing situations; occasional exposure to aggressive behaviour.
