Salary: £51,294 - £54,879
We're looking to appoint a full-time Communications Manager in our Corporate Communications Team.
West Yorkshire Police is the country's fourth largest force serving more than 2.2 million people. As a Communications Manager, you will play a key role in ensuring we engage effectively with our communities through traditional, social and digital channels. Our aim is to build trust and confidence with people in West Yorkshire by communicating in a timely, accurate and transparent way.
Reporting to the Head of Corporate Communications and working with the wider management team, your role will be to lead a team of eight communications officers and a Digital Engagement Officer. You will be responsible for managing West Yorkshire Police's response to serious and sometimes critical incidents and assisting the team in exploring new ways to tell our stories and reach our communities.
You will manage the day to day running of our press office, be the first point of escalation for media relations and social media issues and aid your team's continual development.
You will have an in-depth understanding of current issues affecting policing and be expected to provide sound, professional advice to officers and staff at all levels to ensure an effective force response to key matters. Your role will be to consider risks while ensuring a joined-up and coordinated approach across internal and external communications.
You will also be expected to represent the Head of Corporate Communications both internally and externally including within multi-agency partnerships.
Previous management experience is desirable, and an excellent knowledge of current affairs, the political landscape, and the media will be required.
Applicants should be prepared to work flexible hours to support the needs of the department, including responding at short notice to live-time incidents, which may necessitate working outside core hours.
The successful applicant will work alongside the current Corporate Communications Manager, who works Monday - Wednesday. The team is based at HQ in Wakefield but hybrid working is available and encouraged.
