Job summary

Prospero Teaching in Oldham is seeking a Youth Mentor (Specialist Support Role) to join a SEND-focused trust. The role is a full-time, permanent position with a Monday–Friday 8:30am–3:30pm schedule, term-time only, and a weekly rate of £550–£750.

You will provide one-to-one mentoring and group support to vulnerable students with complex learning, SEMH, and trauma-informed needs, helping them engage in education and navigate crises with a calm, solutions-focused approach.

Qualifications

• Experience in a mentoring, youth work, behaviour support, or pastoral role - ideally within a SEND, SEMH, or alternative provision setting
• A strong understanding of the challenges faced by young people with social, emotional, and mental health needs
• Emotionally resilient, calm under pressure, and solutions-focused in complex situations
• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills - with students, families, and wider professionals
• A creative, energetic approach to re‑engaging young people who have disengaged from traditional education
• A background in psychology, social work, youth services, or mental health is a strong advantage

Responsibilities

• Provide one-to-one mentoring, supporting individual students to navigate challenges
• Lead small group sessions to reinforce positive behaviours and engagement
• Support in classroom and pastoral settings to maintain a safe learning environment
• Assist students in crisis moments with calm, trauma-informed intervention and de-escalation

As a Youth Mentor, you'll work at the heart of a close-knit, dedicated team supporting some of the most complex and vulnerable young people in Oldham. To Be Eligible You Must:

• Hold the Right to Work in the UK
• Hold an enhanced DBS on the update service, or be willing to apply for a new one
• Provide two professional references from child-related roles
