Job description

The job itself

This is an exciting opportunity to join the ‘Outstanding’ Youth Justice Service as a Youth Justice Practitioner on a 12-month fixed term contract. The service received a maximum score in the HMIP Inspection in January 2026, with the report noting ‘excellent work to achieve positive change for children and to keep children and the community safe. Assessing, planning and delivery were consistently strong across all areas.’ ‘Work to keep children and communities safe was also exceptional, with practitioners recognising the factors that affected safety.’

We want to hear from people who are passionate to making a difference to the lives of others, can work in an enjoyable and fast paced environment and have the skills to ensure that children and young people are at the heart of service delivery.

Key responsibilities of a Youth Justice Practitioner include:

  • Manage a caseload of young people who are subject to youth justice supervision, predominantly lower-level orders, enabling the service to fulfil its statutory obligations including the management of risks to young people and the public and the enforcement of court/out of court disposals.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with service users to ensure their continued engagement with the support offered and their participation in their case assessment, planning and review process.
  • Undertake high quality assessments and reviews for a range of lower order cases, using well-defined structured assessment tools (including assessment of the risk of re-offending and of causing harm to self or others), to inform decisions and plans regarding their support. These will be undertaken in accordance with defined procedures.
  • Devise and implement (with supervision) outcome focused intervention plans that reduce the likelihood of offending or re-offending.
  • Supervise young people undertaking a community sentence or youth caution, to ensure they comply with the terms of their sentence or caution and support them in mandated reparative activities. This may include Intensive Surveillance and Supervision, bail support, reparation, behaviour programmes and constructive activities.
  • Prepare reports and submissions for panels and other forums, in accordance with well-defined local and national requirements and standards, so that the relevant information is available for decision-making.
  • Communicate and share information effectively within a multi-agency team that includes relevant partner agencies, to enable a cohesive response to safeguarding and public protection issues that delivers the best outcomes for young people and victims.
  • Represent the Youth Justice Service in designated formal settings such as court, police stations and custodial establishments, so that the Council’s legislative obligations are met.
  • Maintain accurate case records in line with national and local policies and requirements, to ensure information is accessible and auditable.
  • Undertake restorative justice activities with young people and victims to repair the harm caused to victims and to reduce the risk of further offending.
