Job Description

As part of a small, dedicated team, the Youth Employment Mentor provides progression mentoring and employability support to young people (16–24) who are the children of serving or veteran parents/guardians. Many of these young people face unique challenges linked to mobility, parental separation, caring responsibilities, disrupted education and networks, and the Youth Employment Mentor will be there to help them discover their skills and strengths, raise their aspirations, and set and achieve goals.

This is a varied, hands-on role that mixes 1:1 mentoring, creative workshop delivery, and community engagement with schools, youth services, and Armed Forces networks. The Youth Employment Mentor also manages their caseload, records outcomes, and contributes to programme sustainability and growth through proactive networking and partnership building.

Responsibilities
Mentoring and youth support
  • Provide tailored 1:1 mentoring and group workshops to help young people build confidence, CVs, and life skills.
  • Support young people to prepare for applications and interviews, encouraging resilience and aspiration.
  • Help young people develop practical skills such as goal setting, time management, and communication.
Organisation and delivery
  • Manage a diverse caseload of young people, tracking progress through our CRM and working to agreed KPIs.
  • Record activity accurately, following FEC policies, safeguarding procedures, and GDPR compliance.
  • Contribute to case studies and impact reports that demonstrate programme outcomes.
Engagement and networking
  • Raise awareness of FEC’s support for young people from Armed Forces families.
  • Support the Education and Skills Liaison to build relationships with schools, FE/HE, youth and community groups, and military networks to generate referrals.
  • Attend and deliver employability workshops, school events, and careers fairs (including some evenings/weekends).
  • Work with Education and Skills Liaison and FEC’s Employer Engagement team to create opportunities for young people.
Creativity and innovation
  • Contribute to the design of engaging, tailored workshops and career development activities.
  • Continuously learn from young people and partners to adapt and improve delivery.
  • Bring energy, ideas, and initiative to help the programme grow and remain future-ready.
Role Requirements
Essential Competencies:
  • Background in education, youth work, employability, or mentoring – with evidence of supporting young people to overcome challenges.
  • Passionate about personal development and helping young people achieve their goals.
  • Strong communication and rapport-building skills, with the ability to inspire confidence and increase aspirations.
  • Evidence of delivering to KPIs or service level agreements in a person-centred role.
  • Highly organised, with strong admin skills and experience using CRMs, Microsoft Office, and Outlook.
  • Confident self-starter who can manage a caseload independently, exercise judgment, and use initiative.
  • Proactive and supportive team player, aligned with FEC’s values of inclusion, empathy, and empowerment.
  • Confident presenter, able to engage groups of young people as well as professional stakeholders.
Desirable Competencies:
  • Charity background – understanding of funding and impact reporting.
  • Lived experience of military family life.
  • Knowledge of employment, education, training, apprenticeships, and youth services.
