Youth Coach/Trainer - Saturday Night Lights Teen Program

The Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA is seeking a Youth Coach/Trainer who will be responsible for leading a group or team of teens in a designated sport and progressive skill development. The Youth Coach/Trainer will promote the enjoyment of sports while improving physical competence, developing confidence, and teaching healthy competition.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Provide a fun, safe, and positive experience for all participants.
2. Demonstrate strong service and hospitality with all constituents, including program participants and parents/guardians.
3. Create an all-inclusive and supportive learning environment.
4. Teach progressive lessons and provide opportunities to demonstrate learned skills.
5. Encourage a lifetime of participation in sports and physical activity.
6. Coach games that allow for equal playing time.
7. Be responsible for team equipment.
8. Work to establish and improve group unity and spirit.
9. Be available for the program on Saturday evenings.
10. Embody the YMCA Core Values.
11. Work with the supervisor to develop program objectives, goals, and logistics.
12. Schedule team practices and games during Saturday Night Lights Teen Center hours in collaboration with Teen Advisors.
13. Create written plans for all practices that are age-appropriate and progressive, as needed.
14. Provide supervision of the players to ensure safety and engagement.
15. Be able to modify and adapt coaching styles to meet the needs of the participants.
16. Emphasize teamwork and sportsmanship over winning and the outcome of the game.
17. Teach rules and fundamentals and enhance basic skills.
18. Communicate with parents/guardians regarding schedules and additional YMCA opportunities.
19. Ensure that all equipment is age-appropriate, safe, and in proper working condition.
20. Work with the Supervisor to develop and lead program promotion and recruitment efforts.
21. Inform the Manager on Duty (MOD) of any incident reports that need to be filled out.
22. Actively participate in designated meetings, training sessions, and special events.
23. Adhere to all Saturday Night Lights funding expectations and requirements.
24. Keep a safe and clean activity space.

Desired Skills & Experience:

• High School diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum of two (2) years of experience coaching children/teens in a structured setting.
• Content expert in designated sport(s). Coaching license in the respective sport preferred.
• In-depth knowledge of sporting strategies.
• Current First Aid/CPR certifications.
• Knowledge of youth development stages.
• Must attend the YMCA Coaching 101 Training within 90 days of hire.
• Must receive the CDC HEADS UP Concussion in Youth Sports certificate within 30 days of hire.
• Must complete the Child Abuse Prevention Training within 30 days of hire.
• Ability to communicate effectively with members of all ages.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Must be available to work Saturday evenings.
