Down Syndrome Training & Support Service Ltd

Salary: £13to £15 per hour depending on experience

Hours: Part- Time, 3 to 4 hours per week

Annual leave: 5.6 weeks per year plus public holidays

The Down Syndrome Training & Support Service, based in Bingley is looking for a youth worker to help run theirFriday youth club, called the WisH Club (Weekend is Here). The Club is for young people with Down syndrome aged 11 upwards.

The Down Syndrome Training & Support Service Ltd is a charitable company based in Bingley with outreach across the North of England and beyond. We work with families and professionals living and working with people who have Down syndrome aged birth upwards offering support through many activities and services designed to promote the wellbeing of families and the education, development and inclusion of people with Down syndrome.

The Down Syndrome Training & Support Service is looking for a youth worker to help run our Friday youth club, called the WisH Club (Weekend is Here). The Club is for young people with Down syndrome aged 11 upwards. Members are welcome to bring one friend or sibling in order to provide a more inclusive setting and some members attend with their personal assistant.

The club, established in 2014, is delivered by two youth workers and several volunteers. It is based in the top floor of our centre in Bingley and currently has 20 members and a regular attendance of about 10 each week.

Prime Objectives Of The Post:

To be responsible for the wellbeing of the members of the youth club

  • To provide support for the youth club members
  • To work with the Youth Club Coordinator (YCC) to help achieve the smooth running of the club
  • To liaise with parents/carers to ensure the needs of the young people are understood and met

Range Of Duties:

To liaise with the youth club coordinator

To actively engage the young people who attend the group in age appropriate activities and games ensuring they are safe and comfortable and enjoying themselves.

To engage with parents and develop a bond between the club and the families concerned.

To liaise with YCC to update individual personal care plans and personal evacuation plans

  • To liaise with the YCC to set individual targets for members around interaction, selfcare skills, time and money skills and age appropriate behaviour and to record progress
  • To overview transport arrangements for members (if required)
  • To tidy away equipment and clean up after the session
  • To purchase refreshments for the tuck shop, materials and other equipment.
  • To keep equipment and resources clean and safe
  • To ensure the safety and wellbeing of the young people in our care at all times.
  • To ensure safeguarding procedures are adhered to

Along with the Youth Club Coordinator to:

help plan group activities to enhance interaction and develop self care skills

help with the admin associated with the club particularly with regard to personal care plans

help promote the club to recruit new members.

  • help accurately record attendance and evaluate the club.
  • help supervise the young people on half termly trips out.

Personal Specification

Experience of working in a similar role

  • Well motivated, reliable, sensible and experienced in working with young people who have a learning disability
  • Experience of working as part of a team
  • A clear understanding of safeguarding and how to apply it to children and vulnerable adults.
  • A clear understanding of confidentiality and data protection and how to apply these within the working environment.
  • Able to communicate effectively and sensitively with young people in the club and their families
  • A recognised youth worker qualification or similar OR to be working towards a qualification
  • An understanding of Down syndrome and experience of working with families who have a child with Down syndrome.

Terms and Conditions

The position is subject to a satisfactory enhanced DBS check and reference and will be offered initially until 31 st December 2025 with a probationary review after the first 3 and 6 months.
