Yard Operative

Branch: Norwich

AJW Distribution Ltd is an independently owned family run company that supplies roofing, cladding, and general building materials to various contractors, builders, building merchants, and the general public.
At AJW Distribution, we believe that service is the most important part of what we do. As a result, we always go that extra mile to satisfy our customers’ needs and requirements.

We are currently looking for someone to work in the yard ensuring that it runs efficiently and smoothly, with stock and orders being on time and accurate, ensuring that customers and suppliers experience an outstanding and professional service when they come on site.

What will I be doing?

Not one day is the same as the next in AJW daily working life, but here are a few pointers;

Summary of compulsory yard functions
• Ensure safe and effective day to day running of FLT and ensure company regulations are adhered to.
• Ensure the yard is kept tidy at all times and up to health and safety standards.
• Ensure all customers are dealt with quickly and effectively in accordance with the AJW Distribution Group Platform.
• Ensure all paperwork is completed as required by the AJW Distribution Group Procedures.
• Record and report any breakages to your branch manager as and when they occur.
• Monitor stock and report any low levels to your branch manager.
• Ensure all people entering the yard are accompanied by and AJW employee and wearing the required PPE.
• Ensure all forklifts are used by trained personnel only and in the correct manor.

Summary of picking functions
• Ensure all orders for collection are picked within 24hrs of receiving them.
• Ensure all orders for delivery are picked ASAP, they must be picked at least 24hrs prior to delivery.
• Ensure all picked orders are double checked prior to wrapping.
• Wrap and securely fasten all picked items to their pallet or in there box.
• Fill in and attach to each pallet an AJW Distribution Group delivery sticker.
• Complete the picking note with the picked quantities and any notes to the office.
• Sign the picking note in the picked by box.
• Store the picked items in the goods outbound bay.
• If there are no picking issue’s put the picking note back in the correct delivery or collection tray.
• If there are picking issue’s pass the picking note to the delivery co-ordinator.
• Mark the delivery as picked on the delivery board (use a red pen to put a P in a circle)

Summary of loading functions
• All materials must be loaded from a picking note. No exceptions.
• Check you are loading the correct material and that the quantities match the picking note.
• Ensure all pallets for delivery are marked up with an AJW Distribution delivery sticker.
• Sign the loaded by box on the picking note.
• Return the picking note to the delivery co-ordinator.

Summary of customer collection functions
• All customers must report to the sales office prior to being loaded.
• All customers must have a picking note to be loaded from.
• Load the customers vehicle from a picking note.
• Check all goods match the picking note and the quantities match.
• Sign the loaded by box on the picking note.
• Take the customer back to the sales office with the picking note.

Summary of deliveries received functions
• Take the delivery note to the office prior to offloading and ask for a copy of our purchase order to ensure we can receive the delivery and it is for the depot.
• Offload the vehicle in accordance with the AJW Distribution Group Procedures.
• Check the delivery from any breakages, make note of these and report to the delivery driver and your branch manager immediately.
• Sign the delivery ticket. Hand the delivery driver back is part.
• Locate all stock received into the correct location as per the stock map.
• Mark on the delivery ticket the location in which the stock has been placed.
• Pass the delivery ticket to the branch manager to be booked in.

Summary of stock management functions
• Ensure the daily stock check is carried out every day.
• Ensure all breakages or stock shortages are reported to your branch manager.
• Ensure any stock moved from one location to another is noted on the stock movement form and handed into your branch manager every day.
• Advise your branch manager of low stock.

The yard must be kept clean and tidy at all times. All stock must be located correctly as and when received.


Experience in the Roofing Industry is preferred but not essential as full training will be provided.
