Job description

Wycombe Abbey rowing opportunities are offered at Dorney Lake (the London Olympic Games 2012 venue) and in land-based Ergometer sessions at School.

Coaching is available for all abilities, from beginners to those wishing to develop their skills for competition. As a British Rowing Affiliated Club, Wycombe Abbey Rowing Club competes in races on the water and at the National Indoor Rowing Championships. Pupils have recently completed testing for the British Rowing Talent Identification and Development programme for the GB Rowing Team, with some being selected to join our local club, Marlow, to further develop their talent.

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and flexible Rowing Coach at Wycombe Abbey to work across the School’s full age range, coaching our rowing team for a couple of hours a week within a flexible time window of 5:30pm – 8:30pm on weekdays and 12:00pm – 4:00pm on weekends.

Aims: The Rowing Coach will work closely with the Director of Sport to promote the subject, enabling pupils to enjoy an active pursuit of Physical Education at all levels.

Responsible to: Director of Sport.

Key Areas of Responsibility
  • Coach pupils from complete beginners to high standards, providing encouragement, support, and guidance.
  • Prepare pupils for competitions and races, encouraging participation and development.
  • Lead and organise rowing crews throughout the season, ensuring ongoing feedback and support.
  • Develop and implement tailored training plans for pupils.
  • Lead weekly land-based sessions and water-based sessions off-site.
  • Attend races and competitions as agreed with the Director of Sport.
  • Maintain ongoing professional development and stay updated on junior rowing developments.
  • Follow guidelines and procedures for visiting staff as per the Staff Handbook.
  • Assess, record, and report on pupils' development, progress, and attainment.
  • Promote pupils' overall wellbeing and progress.
  • Maintain professionalism, discipline, and safeguarding standards at all times.
  • Support rowing activities and equipment setup, adhering to health and safety rules.
  • Contribute to departmental objectives, such as sharing resources and organizing enrichment events.
  • Align with Wycombe Abbey's aims and ethos.
Person Specification
Specialist Skills and Experience
  • Strong understanding of water safety and ability to teach its importance to young people.
  • Desirable but not essential: British Rowing L2 Club Coach/Session Coach qualification, RYA Powerboat Level 2, First Aid Certificate. Training can be provided if needed.

Salary: Competitive pay scale above the maintained sector.
