Job summary

The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama is seeking a skilled workshop technician to join the Technical & Production team in its busy, collaborative workshop in London. You will maintain a safe, well-equipped space and support students as they develop practical skills in carpentry, metalwork, and related theatre crafts.

You will work closely with the Workshop Manager and technical tutors, gaining exposure to a range of equipment including carpentry tools, welding gear, and CNC machinery

Qualifications

• Strong technical knowledge of carpentry and metalworking tools, equipment, and workshop processes.
• A proactive, hands-on approach with problem-solving skills and ability to maintain tools and spaces.
• Commitment to safe working practices, including PUWER, COSHH, and manual handling regulations.
• Clear communication to support, guide, and induct students and other workshop users.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a safe, well-equipped workshop space for students and staff.
• Support students as they develop practical skills in carpentry, metalwork, and related areas.
• Contribute to the creation of scenery, props, and staging for productions.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama's Technical & Production team, working at the heart of a busy, collaborative workshop. You'll play a key role in maintaining a safe, well-equipped workshop space, supporting students as they develop their practical skills, and contributing to the creation of scenery, props, and staging for a wide range of productions. You'll work closely with the Workshop Manager and technical tutors, with exposure to specialist equipment-including carpentry and metalworking tools, welding equipment, and CNC machinery-while helping shape a positive, inclusive, and professionally focused learning environment. This role offers excellent opportunities to broaden your technical practice, develop new skills, and contribute to the training of the next generation of theatre makers.
