Job summary

Dumfries and Galloway Council is recruiting a Vehicle & Plant Mechanic to support its Garroch workshop in Dumfries. The role offers a 36-hour week with overtime options and a salary of £33,621–£35,853 per year, plus a range of benefits and a modern, well-equipped facility.

You'll maintain a diverse fleet (HGVs, buses, vans, minibuses, trailers, cars) and be part of a professional team. A full driving licence is essential; LGV/PSV is desirable.

Qualifications

  • Full driving licence is essential.
  • LGV/PSV licence is desirable.
  • Flexibility to support overtime and participate in a standby rota as needed.
  • Experience in vehicle and plant maintenance is advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the Council’s wide-ranging fleet including HGVs, buses, minibuses, vans and cars.
  • Perform scheduled servicing and preventative maintenance to required standards.
  • Prepare for and carry out tests and repairs in line with Transport and Health & Safety regulations.
  • There is potential to train as a Class IV, V and VII MOT tester.

Vehicle Plant Mechanic
Location: Garroch Workshop, Cargen Tower, Garroch Business Park, Dumfries, DG2 8PN

Hours: 36 hours per week, with optional overtime
Pay: Time and a half for regular overtime, double time for unsociable hours

Dumfries and Galloway Council is seeking a skilled Vehicle & Plant Mechanic to support its vehicle maintenance operations at our Garroch workshop in Dumfries. You'll be part of a professional, well organised team working in a modern, fully equipped facility.

Your Role

You’ll be responsible for maintaining the Council’s wide-ranging fleet, which includes:

  • Small plant equipment
  • Trailers
  • HGVs and buses
  • Minibuses, vans, and cars
  • Specialist vehicles used in front-line operations

Tasks will include scheduled servicing, preventative maintenance, test preparation, and repairs in line with Transport and Health & Safety legislation. There is also potential to train as a Class IV, V, and VII MOT tester.
