Job description
Overview

As a Technician in our Mechanical Workshop you will be responsible for aiding staff and students in the manufacture of bespoke components and equipment for experimental and research purposes used in environments from beneath the oceans, cleanrooms, high voltage labs to outer space and everything in between.

Responsibilities
  • Manufacture complex and high precision work, machining components from specialist materials using a range of conventional machine tools such as centre lathes and vertical mills.
  • Ideally have experience of CNC machining including multi-axis CNC mills, CNC lathes and EDM; programming, setting and operating would be highly beneficial, with training available for the right candidate.
  • Explain technical issues clearly to those with varying levels of experience and language proficiency; contribute to unique experimental manufacture and design solutions; deliver results efficiently and enhance customers' experience.
  • Demonstrate excellent time management to work in a fast-paced environment; work to tight tolerances and unaccompanied on one-off components to engineering drawings.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Completed a recognised engineering apprenticeship with a minimum City & Guilds / NVQ Level 3-4 in Mechanical Engineering, or proven relevant technical support experience.
  • Experience in manufacturing bespoke components for experimental/research purposes; ability to work with specialist materials.
  • Excellent hand skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication skills; able to explain technical issues to non-specialists or non-native English speakers.
