About the Role

Fleet Services is looking to recruit a Workshop Support Operative to provide practical operational support within the Council’s Fleet Workshops. The role will help ensure vehicles are moved safely, prepared for service and maintained to high standards.

The post holder will support a range of workshop activities, including moving vehicles, including HGVs, within the depot and to external locations such as MOT test centres and service providers. The role will also involve washing and cleaning vehicles, including Refuse Collection Vehicles, carrying out basic vehicle checks, supporting workshop housekeeping activities and helping to maintain a safe, organised and compliant working environment.

This is an important support role within Fleet Services. By undertaking non-technical duties such as vehicle movements, MOT preparation, vehicle washing, parts collections and general workshop support activities, the post will release significant technician capacity, allowing qualified Vehicle Technicians to focus on inspections, repairs, preventative maintenance and defect rectification. This will improve workshop productivity, vehicle availability and support the Council’s fleet compliance obligations.

About You
The ideal candidate will have:
  • A valid Category C (Class 2) driving licence and Driver CPC qualification.
  • Experience of working in a workshop, transport, fleet or similar operational environment.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of Health and Safety requirements and the ability to follow safe systems of work.
  • Knowledge of the safe operation of vehicles, including HGVs, and the ability to identify defects or safety concerns.
  • The ability to carry out vehicle pre-use inspections and basic maintenance checks.
  • The ability to use cleaning equipment, pressure washers and chemicals safely.
  • The ability to complete basic documentation, including defect reports and vehicle movement records.
  • A flexible and collaborative approach to work, with the ability to support workshop operations across a range of activities.
  • Strong organisational skills and a commitment to maintaining high standards of housekeeping, safety and compliance.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively with colleagues and service providers.
