Workshop Operative

Salary: £13.70 per hour, £27,427 per annum

Hours: 38.5 hours per week

Monday to Thursday: 8.00am to 4.30pm

Friday: 8.00am to 3.00pm

Contract: Full-time

Start date: Immediate start available

We are recruiting for a Workshop Operative to join an established specialist manufacturing business that designs and produces bespoke engineered products for customers operating in highly regulated industries.

This is a varied, practical role that would suit someone who is mechanically minded, enjoys hands‑on work and takes pride in producing accurate, high-quality results.

The Workshop Operative role

Reporting to the Workshop Supervisor and wider management team, the Workshop Operative will support the day-to-day running of the workshop. Duties will include light machine work, component assembly, inspection, material handling, packing, deliveries and general workshop activities.

The successful Workshop Operative will work alongside another team member, with support from an experienced Workshop Supervisor. You will be expected to work safely and accurately, ensuring work is completed in line with production schedules and customer requirements.

Key duties

• Carrying out light machine shop duties, including cutting, linishing, drilling, polishing and cleaning


• Processing raw materials, including cutting pipe and round bar using workshop machinery


• Selecting and identifying the correct materials from stock


• Completing general preparation and finishing work


• Assisting with the assembly of components and equipment using engineering drawings, specifications and production instructions


• Inspecting parts, incoming goods and completed assemblies to ensure they meet the required quality standards


• Completing inspection, certification, traceability and production paperwork accurately


• Receiving incoming materials and checking quantities, specifications and supporting documentation


• Labelling and collating items against purchase orders, cast numbers, heat numbers and other traceability information


• Assisting with workshop stock control and inventory management


• Packing goods securely for transportation in accordance with relevant requirements


• Ensuring all documentation accurately reflects the goods being supplied


• Acting as the first point of contact for delivery and carrier drivers attending the site


• Collecting and delivering materials, components and finished goods when required


• Carrying out forklift duties where appropriately trained and authorised


• Maintaining a clean, organised and safe workshop


• Completing routine housekeeping and ensuring machinery is shut down correctly when not in use


• Following all company health and safety procedures and wearing the required PPE


• Supporting other reasonable workshop and operational duties as required

Experience and requirements

• Mechanically minded, practical and comfortable working in a hands-on environment


• Interested in how things work and keen to develop new skills


• Able to follow instructions, procedures and production requirements


• Accurate and attentive when handling materials, identification details and documentation


• Comfortable undertaking repetitive duties, including packing, labelling and preparing larger quantities of goods


• Physically able to carry out manual handling of materials and component parts


• Able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team


• Organised and capable of working to deadlines and production schedules


• Reliable, punctual and safety-conscious


• Flexible and willing to undertake a varied range of workshop duties

Previous experience within an engineering, manufacturing, workshop, production or warehouse environment would be preferred but is not essential. Applications are also welcomed from candidates with a genuine mechanical interest, such as working on cars or motorbikes, repairing equipment or building things as a hobby.

A full driving licence would be advantageous, as occasional collection and delivery duties may be required.

Training and longer-term opportunity

Full training will be provided on the company's workshop machinery and processes.

For the right person, there will be an opportunity to become more involved in assembling the company's specialist equipment. This will include learning how to follow assembly drawings, identify component parts and understand how the finished products fit together.

A counterbalance forklift licence would be beneficial but is not essential. The company may be prepared to provide forklift training following successful completion of the probationary period.
