Job summary

Hamilton Barnes is seeking an experienced Windows Infrastructure Engineer for a pure-play Wintel contract. The role focuses on active directory, GPOs, patch management, and building/troubleshooting enterprise Windows environments across multi-site estates.

Responsibilities include design and maintenance of AD, PKI, clustering, VDI/RDS, deployment tooling, and automation with PowerShell. Remote work available for this six-month engagement in the UK.

Responsibilities

• Administer multi-site Active Directory: domain controllers, FSMO roles, sites & services, replication troubleshooting (repadmin, dcdiag)
• Design, apply, and troubleshoot Group Policy Objects (GPOs), security baselines, software deployment, login scripts, folder redirection
• Manage Certificate Services (PKI), issuing CAs, certificate templates, auto-enrollment, renewals
• Build and maintain Windows Failover Clusters (Cluster Shared Volumes, quorum config, cluster-aware updating)
• Own patch management via WSUS/SCCM/MECM, patch rings, compliance reporting, emergency out-of-band patching
• Administer file services, DFS-N/DFS-R, NTFS and share permissions, quota/FSRM policies
• Support RDS/Citrix session host environments, RDS licensing, session collections, profile management (UPD/FSLogix)
• Build servers from imaging/deployment tooling (MDT, SCCM OSD, or template-based VM builds)
• Manage VMware vSphere or Hyper‑V hosts and guest performance for Windows workloads
• Write PowerShell for build automation, bulk AD administration (New-ADUser, bulk GPO reporting), and health-check scripting
• Monitor and tune server performance (Perfmon, Resource Monitor, Event Viewer/Event Log correlation)
• Troubleshoot Kerberos/NTLM authentication issues, time sync (NTP/W32Time), and DNS resolution problems
• Manage backup/restore and DR testing for Windows server workloads (Veeam/Commvault)
• Support server decommissioning, OS upgrades (e.g. 2012 R2 ? 2019/2022), and AD/Entra ID hybrid sync (Azure AD Connect/Entra Connect)
• Maintain build standards, runbooks, and change documentation (ITIL-aligned)

The organization is currently on the lookout for a Windows Infrastructure Engineer for a pure-play Wintel contract, suited to someone who lives in AD, GPOs, and server builds day-to-day. The ideal candidate will be able to troubleshoot at domain-controller level within an existing Wintel estate, own patching and clustering, and build new servers from bare metal or template without hand-holding.

Skills/Must Have:

• 5+ years hands-on Wintel engineering (not just admin/support, genuine build and design experience)
• Deep Active Directory: multi-domain/forest, FSMO, replication, trust relationships
• Advanced Group Policy design and troubleshooting
• WSUS/SCCM/MECM patch management at enterprise scale
• Windows Server Failover Clustering
• PowerShell scripting to a proficient/advanced level (not copy-paste)
• VMware vSphere or Hyper‑V administration
• DFS, NTFS permissions, FSRM
• Strong Kerberos/NTLM/DNS/time-sync troubleshooting

Desirable Skills:

• RDS/Citrix session host administration, FSLogix
• Azure AD Connect / Entra Connect hybrid identity
• MDT/SCCM OSD imaging
• Certificate Services (PKI) administration
• MCSA/MCSE or current Microsoft certs (AZ-800/AZ-801)
• Regulated, enterprise, or public-sector environment experience
