Job summary

Wakefield Council is seeking a motivated individual to join their Equipment and Wheelchair Service team. This role offers a unique training opportunity to become a fully qualified Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist, with all training fees covered. The successful candidate will work in diverse settings, delivering quality care while developing their skills through a supported apprenticeship program.

Job description

We are currently looking for a forward-thinking and enthusiastic individual to join our existing team at Wakefield Equipment and Wheelchair Service. If unqualified, the post holder will be supported to achieve an Occupational Therapist/Physiotherapist Degree at Huddersfield University. This is an exciting training opportunity to become a full HCPC-registered Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist. All training fees will be paid by the council if required.

If you are not already qualified as an Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist, applicants will be required to undertake the Occupational Therapist (Integrated Degree) Level 6 Apprenticeship Standard or Physiotherapist (Integrated Degree) Level 6 Apprenticeship Standard. For entry onto the programme, you must hold 120 UCAS points from A levels or a recognized Higher Education Diploma with a strong science bias, including:

  1. BBB at A Level, preferably in a health-related subject.
  2. Merit at T Level in Health or Healthcare Science.
  3. Distinction in BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care or Applied Science.
  4. NCFE CACHE Technical Level 3 Extended Diploma/Level 3 in Health and Social Care at Grade B.
  5. Access to Higher Education Diploma with 45 Level 3 credits, 30 at Distinction and 15 at Merit.

You will also need Grade C/4 at GCSE in both Maths and English, with certificates as evidence.

Eligibility criteria for government-funded apprenticeships include being aged 16 or over and having been a resident in the UK/EU for the last three years.

The Role

You will be an integral part of a team committed to delivering high-quality clinical care in a supported environment where your transferable skills will be valued. You must be a committed, proactive, and enthusiastic individual.

Your work will involve a variety of settings, including clinics, residential care, and people’s homes, to deliver quality service.

If unqualified, you will undertake the academic components of the Apprenticeship course while continuing to achieve clinical competencies or Wheelchair Therapists' national competencies.

  • Knowledge of NHS Wheelchair Services
  • Understanding of promoting people’s independence
  • Basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology
  • Awareness of relevant legislation and standards
  • Knowledge of the personalisation agenda and national guidance around Personal Wheelchair Budgets
  • Understanding of environmental requirements related to wheelchair specification and usage (powered and non-powered)
  • Must be a car driver and owner
