Wheelchair Therapist

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a Specialist Team of Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists providing wheelchair assessment and prescription, and postural management advice to children, young people and adults in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.This post will suit both Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist looking to enhance their skills in postural management in a community setting.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be required to participate in the delivery of the countywide Wheelchair Service providing specialist assessments and advice to clients including those who often present with complex needs. Assessment clinics are situated in Hayle, Truro and Liskeard with travel to place of residence required in some circumstances.To contribute to clinical governance and service development within the Wheelchair Service in partnership with professional specialists, the Clinical Lead and Wheelchair Service Team Lead.

Person Specification
Knowledge and abilities
  • Knowledge of clinical governance and ability to involve service users in service improvement
Qualifications
  • Current professional registration with the HCPC
  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Occupational Therapy / Physiotherapy
  • IELTS unless qualification taken in English
Experience
  • Experience providing information, recommendations and advice to clients, carers, and families to promote optimal function and independence using compensatory strategies to promote health & well-being
  • Experience of working with multi-disciplinary and multi-agency teams, with an understanding of team roles and professional roles
  • Experience of assessing cognitive, sensory and motor impairment and its impact on function, posture and mobility
Skills and Aptitude
  • Skilled in time and self-management, working flexibly as part of a team with the ability to engage with other professionals
  • Able to work in highly stressful situations including the ability to manage distressing and highly emotive situations successfully
  • Highly developed communication skills and ability to adapt approach to those cognitively impaired or with learning disabilities
