Job summary

Heavy Haul Rail in Leeds seeks a Wheel Lathe Operator to ensure safety, reliability and performance of rail vehicles. You will work within a skilled engineering team, carrying out tyre turning on locomotives, wagons and wheelsets to the highest standards of safety and quality.

You will support maintenance activities with precision machining, operate related equipment as trained, and maintain accurate maintenance records. A strong safety mindset and teamwork are essential for this role.

Qualifications

  • Experience in machining environments and working to tight tolerances.
  • Apprenticeship or engineering qualification or equivalent practical experience.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Good communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Strong safety focus and documentation discipline.

Responsibilities

  • Operate the wheel lathe to perform tyre turning on locomotives, wagons and wheelsets per maintenance plans and engineering standards.
  • Support locomotive, wagon and wheelset maintenance through precision machining and inspection.
  • Operate auxiliary equipment (forklift trucks, overhead cranes, shunt vehicles) as trained.
  • Accurately complete maintenance records using electronic asset management systems.
  • Carry out pre-use checks on tooling and equipment and perform basic preventive maintenance on the wheel lathe.
  • Maintain clean, safe, and efficient working environment; uphold high housekeeping standards.
  • Participate in training, safety briefings and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to deliver safe, high-quality engineering outcomes.

But none of this happens without us, its people. ***Join our team:*** ***Wheel Lathe Operator*****What You’ll Do**As a Wheel Lathe Operator, you'll play a vital role in ensuring the safety, reliability and performance of our rail vehicles.
