We are offering an exciting opportunity to join the Welfare Rights, Debt Advice, and Fairer Charging Service as part of a team of experienced welfare rights and debt advisers.

We are looking to appoint two full-time Welfare Rights Officers who will provide specialist welfare rights advice, including appeal representation for Salford residents. The roles involve collaborating with local organizations and across the health and care system to help reduce health inequalities.

The Welfare Rights and Debt Advice and Fairer Charging Service is a well-established team within the Adult Social Care and Health Partnerships Directorate. Annually, the service provides welfare rights and debt advice to over 4,000 Salford citizens and secured over £11 million in benefits for residents in 2024/25.

Salford City Council is committed to supporting residents facing financial hardship. In response to ongoing Cost of Living pressures, the City Mayor and Cabinet have approved additional support initiatives, including a new benefit uptake program for pensioners delivered by the Welfare Rights and Debt Advice Service.

The service offers a supportive environment with one-to-one management and peer support, alongside a strong focus on learning and development. We are a person-centered service, listening to client feedback to ensure accessibility and positive outcomes. Here are some client comments:

  • “You have been very helpful and appreciate your help and that you've listened to me.”
  • “Thanks so much for all your time and effort in helping me with this; it’s a massive weight off my shoulders, and I can’t thank you enough!”
  • “Thank you for everything that you have done; you are so kind. I never thought I’d get help the way you have helped me & loads of others.”
  • “Without your help, I would struggle. I have terrible anxiety and worry about forms like this. It’s a fantastic service, and I am so grateful.”
  • “Yesterday I felt happier than I have in a long time; I could have cried because I’ve struggled quite a bit. This help means the world to me, so thanks.”
  • “Thank you so much for your help and support during a devastating time. If not for you, I don’t think I would have gotten through that dark period.”

The service supports hybrid and flexible working, delivering advice via phone, email, face-to-face in community venues, and home visits where necessary.

Please note that this position is subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, costing £21.50, deducted from the first four months’ salary at £5.38/month. If you do not start employment after the DBS check, you will be invoiced for the full amount.

We will not consider candidates requiring sponsorship for this role.
