Job description

The Emerald Cultural Institute has 40 years’ experience in providing high quality English courses. From the moment our young learners arrive, ECI staff work hard to ensure that they are active, learning effectively and having the educational experience of a lifetime.

Main purpose of the Job

The Welfare Leader’s key responsibility is the overall welfare of the students to ensure they are safe, secure, happy and respect other students, staff and the facilities. They will also assist the ALs in injecting life into the Activities Programme and providing an experience which is stimulating and culturally enriching for students. WLs supervise the students outside the classroom, overseeing their welfare, safety and discipline at all times.

Duties
  • Attend on-line training, safeguarding course and pre-course induction.
  • Arrive one day before the start date to help set up the centre.
  • Welcome students on the first Sunday with orientation around the site, checking into rooms, and providing initial ‘getting to know you’ entertainment as directed by the Activity Manager.
  • Prioritize the safety and well-being of all students, ensuring compliance with the school’s safeguarding and child protection policies.
  • Promote a culture of vigilance and awareness among staff and students.
  • Supervises the ‘going to bed’ and ‘getting up’ routines, morning and afternoon breaks, meal times, free time supervision and any additional duties on a rota basis.
  • Monitors the health and safety, welfare and discipline of students, anticipating discrimination, bullying, and damage.
  • Monitors the whereabouts of students through roll-calls at meetings, lunch-time and in the evenings, ensuring that curfews are kept and bed-times respected.
  • Attends staff meetings/admin slots for briefings, liaising with the centre team and training (on a rota basis).
  • Encourages full and enthusiastic involvement by students in the scheduled Activity Programme, leading by example.
  • Completes attendance records of students as required and reports on non-attendance or ill-discipline.
  • Supervises the departure of the students on their departure day, checking beds and facilities, collecting keys as appropriate, escorting students and luggage to pick-up points at agreed times.
  • Assists CD/WM with damage surveys when necessary.
  • Provides pastoral care for every student particularly individual students by ensuring students are adjusting to cultural differences and that their religious and dietary needs are met and respected.
  • Helps all students to integrate with other students and encourage them in all activities.
  • Provides assistance with the overall welfare and care of the students, meeting students daily and helping with any personal problems or concerns.
  • Monitors any sick students throughout the day.
  • Plays a pivotal role in guiding and organising students on excursions.
  • Carries out a night duty on a rota basis and makes sure that all buildings are locked and secure.
  • Ensures students are in their rooms with lights out by 11.00 p.m.
  • Monitors student behaviour within the residences and liaises with the management team to report all damage incidences and serious incidences.
Qualifications, experience and requirements of the job
  • First Aid an advantage
  • Experience of working with teenagers in a residential environment
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills
  • Enthusiasm, energy and motivational skills
  • DBS Certification
  • Attendance at ECI online training (including a safeguarding course) and pre-course induction
  • Attendance on six days per week on a rota basis
  • One day off per week usually to be taken mid-week
