Job description

Welding Manager Opportunity with the Civil Works Alliance (CWA), Supporting Sizewell C

As part of the CWA (Civil Works Alliance), you will support the building of Sizewell C. Sizewell C will be a 3.2-gigawatt power station generating low-carbon electricity for around 6 million homes and will play a key role in our energy future, supplying reliable, clean electricity for at least 60 years. This role will be within the Main Civil Works Section.

What will you do?

The CWA is recruiting a Welding Subject Matter Expert to act as its welding technical authority across a complex programme of safety-critical manufacturing and construction.

This is an opportunity to shape welding standards across the manufacture and installation of stainless steel liners, pools, tanks, sumps and other critical components. The role will support supplier facilities in the UK and France, alongside CWA-delivered works at the Sizewell C site.

The successful candidate will:

  • Review and accept supplier WPS and WPQR documentation, together with welder and welding-operator qualifications.
  • Provide welding procedure specifications for CWA self-delivered works.
  • Define welding requirements within inspection and test plans, quality plans and manufacturing gateways, including appropriate hold and witness points.
  • Establish the CWA’s technical position on weld repair, distortion control, consumable management, ferrite control, cleaning, pickling and passivation.
  • Undertake welding surveillance at supplier facilities and on site, including audits against BS EN ISO 3834.
  • Raise and close non-conformance reports, ensuring that root causes are understood and effectively addressed.
  • Work closely with the NDT Subject Matter Expert to establish a consistent weld-quality regime using PAUT, RT, visual inspection and surface inspection methods.
  • Set the welding strategy for modular panel assembly and Nuclear Island works, covering welding coordination, workforce qualification, training and supervision.
  • Support Construction Managers and Section Engineers to improve welding sequence, productivity and right-first-time performance.
  • Assess supplier welding capability during technical bid evaluations and supplier assessments.
  • Promote a strong Nuclear Safety Culture and consistently uphold CWA safety requirements.
What are we looking for?

The CWA is looking for an experienced welding professional who can provide clear, confident and pragmatic technical leadership across multiple workstreams.

Candidates should have:

  • International Welding Engineer, European Welding Engineer or an equivalent qualification.
  • Significant experience of stainless and carbon steel fabrication welding within a safety-critical environment, such as nuclear, pressure equipment or oil and gas.
  • Working knowledge of BS EN ISO 3834, BS EN ISO 9606, BS EN ISO 14731, BS EN ISO 15614 and BS EN ISO 5817.
  • Previous experience as a Responsible Welding Coordinator under BS EN ISO 14731.
  • The ability to interpret engineering drawings, welding procedure specifications, inspection and test plans and NDT reports.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with suppliers, engineers, construction teams and the welding workforce.
  • The ability to meet Security Vetting requirements, which will ordinarily require UK residency for at least three of the previous five years
