Job description

As a Weights Engineer, you will have the opportunity to work on naval platforms throughout all stages of the product life cycle, from early design to build support and commissioning.

The Weight Engineering Team is a multidisciplinary group of engineers and data scientists responsible for estimating, collating, and presenting mass properties data for several multi-billion pound marine engineering programs.

What the role of the Weights Engineer entails:

Some of the main duties include:

  • Collating mass property data for equipment and systems to control weight and centroid on multi-billion pound marine engineering projects
  • Supporting the Mass Properties Lead in aggregating weight and centroid reports and presenting the status to the Chief Naval Architect
  • Collaborating with system design engineers to accurately estimate mass, centroid, and design maturity of various mechanical and electronic systems
  • Maintaining a comprehensive database of parts' mass properties
  • Providing input to and leading weight-saving strategies, and maintaining a list of weight risks and opportunities for each discipline
  • Interrogating CAD models to estimate mass properties with associated uncertainties
  • Using statistical analysis to provide a holistic view of weight risks and opportunities to senior leaders, stakeholders, and clients
What experience you need to be the successful Weights Engineer:
  • Ability to obtain SC Clearance (Sole UK Nationality required)
  • Qualified in a STEM subject or extensive relevant experience
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel
  • Understanding and interpretation of engineering data
  • Experience working with large electrical or mechanical systems
  • Data analysis skills including interpretation, visualization, manipulation, and presentation
  • Experience with CAD packages and programs
  • CEng/IEng status or a clear pathway to professional recognition
