Web Engineer

Company Description

Depop is the community-powered fashion marketplace to buy and sell circular fashion, with over 30 million registered users in more than 150 countries. Depop is a place for anyone to discover and celebrate their style on their own terms, and to feel good about their fashion choices by extending the lives of millions of garments.

The company was founded in 2011 and is headquartered in London with offices in Manchester and New York. Depop has approximately 400 employees dedicated to its mission of building the world's most diverse progressive home of fashion, that's kinder on the planet and kinder to people. In 2021, Depop became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Etsy - the global marketplace for unique and creative goods - and continues to operate as a standalone company.

Depop is an equal opportunity employer. Our mission is to build the world's most diverse progressive home of fashion. To do this, we encourage people from underrepresented communities to apply. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. We're continuing to build recruitment processes that are fair and welcome requests for reasonable adjustments required throughout your interview experience with us. Depop supports visa sponsorship; sponsorship opportunities may be limited to certain roles and skillsets.

Job Description

Depop is looking for an experienced Web Engineer to join us permanently. Within this role, you'll be working in the Marketplace product engineering pillar developing the services used for interaction between our customers, Depop agents, and Depop.

As a member of this cross functional space, you will collaborate with product, design and other engineers to create a seamless, efficient, and trustworthy journey for our users, from the moment they register to the moment they receive an order or need customer support.

You'll own the entire lifecycle of small/medium projects of moderate complexity in both our web app and web APIs. You'll need to be comfortable dealing with uncertainty and ambiguity, proactively pulling in people at the right time. Your work will be pivotal in ensuring we facilitate excellent interactions between Depop and our customers on the platform.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with Engineering Managers, Product Managers, Product Designers, and various Engineers to understand problems and to design solutions.
  • Produce high-quality code that is well-structured and simple to understand that will be used by 1M+ active daily users.
  • Take ownership of product development, from feature discovery, to the breakdown of work, and its implementation.
  • End-to-end application support, including production incident management.
  • Embrace agile methodologies and user-centred thinking.
  • Engage in a culture of continuous improvement by attending events such as blameless post-mortems, architecture reviews, and engineering guild sessions.
  • Collaborate on a daily basis with fellow engineers in the cross functional environment to solve problems and write code.
  • Mentor and coach your colleagues.

Qualifications

  • Solid JavaScript skills, including concepts like asynchronous programming, promises, closures, types, and ES6.
  • HTML/CSS experience, including concepts like layout, specificity, cross browser compatibility, and accessibility.
  • Experience in TypeScript, React and Node.js.
  • Building automated tests using Javascript test frameworks.
  • Experience consuming RESTful API services.
  • Comfortable in using Git.
  • Experience working collaboratively as part of an agile team in a product-focused business.

Nice to haves:

  • Experience deploying web applications at scale.
  • Experience writing RESTful API services, either in Javascript or Kotlin/Scala.
  • Knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience with databases like PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, MySQL.
  • Experience of CI (Continuous Integration) and CD (Continuous Delivery) and embracing DevOps with maintaining pipelines using Jenkins.
