Job summary

WSP is seeking a Water Management Engineer to join the UK/Ireland Mine Water team on a full-time basis in the UK or Naas (Ireland). You will work on mine water management, flood risk, and hydraulic design across international projects, with a clear path to chartership through IEC mentorship.

You will contribute to water resources, environmental assessments and permitting, and support client relationships, with travel for site work as needed and a strong emphasis on health and safety.

Qualifications

• Visible experience in a consulting/engineering environment.
• BSc degree in Water Resource Engineering or Civil Engineering (with hydrology and hydraulics modules); MSc in hydrology would be advantageous.
• Strong technical and report writing skills.
• Excellent spoken and written English communication.
• Collaborative, open team player.
• Good organisational and time-management skills.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook).
• Previous hydrologic/hydraulic assessments and/or design of water management infrastructure.
• Competency with hydrologic/hydraulic modelling software (HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, PCSWMM).
• GIS and CAD proficiency.
• GoldSim Monte Carlo Simulation experience would be advantageous.
• Programming in Python, R, or C would be advantageous.
• Membership of a relevant professional organisation.

Responsibilities

• Hydrological and hydrotechnical design of diversion channels and river works for mining and infrastructure projects.
• Develop technical drawings, BOQs and specifications.
• Conduct flood risk assessments affecting site infrastructure.
• Water balance modelling using GoldSim and similar tools.
• Contribute to dam break analyses and consequence classification.
• Address water resources aspects of mining projects, including environmental assessments and permits.
• Provide construction supervision and site engineering support in the UK and abroad.
• Support designer hazard risk assessments to reduce risk and improve safety.
• Support client relationships and business development.
• Travel for site work internationally as needed.

A little more about your role:

WSP has an opportunity for a Water Management Engineer to join our UK and Ireland Mine Water team on a full-time, permanent basis in our UK offices or Naas office (Ireland).You will work on a wide range of largely international projects spanning mine water management, flood risk, drainage design, dam and reservoir engineering, and environmental water studies. This is an excellent opportunity to develop your career and technical interests while gaining exposure to challenging, multi-disciplinary projects. The work you will do will provide a clear route to engineering chartership. WSP runs an Institution of Civil Engineers training agreement to support you in working towards professional registration under the mentorship of chartered engineers in our team.

The role will focus on working within the mining team on projects predominantly within the mining business, although there is also the potential to work within other local and international sectors including infrastructure, manufacturing and land development.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Hydrological and hydrotechnical designof diversion channels, spillways, culverts, and river engineering works for mining and infrastructure projects across the full project lifecycle.


• Supporting the development of technical drawings, bill of quantities and specifications in line with various forms of contract.


• Flood risk assessments to define flood extents and impacts to site infrastructure


• Water balance modelling using GoldSim and other industry-standard tools.


• Contribute to dam break analyses and consequence classification assessments.


• Contribute to water resources aspects of mining projects, including environmental assessments, permitting, ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) considerations, and water stewardship in the industry.


• Construction supervision and site engineering support, both in the UK and on international assignments (e.g. Africa, Central Asia, Europe).


• Contribute to designer hazard risk assessments with a view to designing out risk where ever possible, and prioritising health & safety risk management on projects.


• Supporting the development and maintenance of client relationships, either through project-based client interaction or through supporting business development efforts of senior staff;


• Travel for domestic or international project-based site work as needed based on personal circumstances.


• Display a ‘safety first’ attitude, promoting positive health and safety, raising safety issues through the appropriate channels and adhering to WSP’s health and safety policy and procedures.

What we will be looking for you to demonstrate:

• Visable experience in a consulting and/or engineering environment.


• BSc degree (or equivalent) in Water Resource Engineering or Civil Engineering (with hydrology and hydraulics modules); MSc in hydrology and/or including hydraulic design would be advantageous.


• Strong technical and report writing skills.


• Excellent communication skills, verbal and written (in English).


• Ability to work in an open and collaborative manner as part of a team.


• Good organisational ability and time management skills.


• Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook).

Desirable skills

• Previous, demonstrable experience conducting hydrologic and hydraulic assessments and / or design of water management infrastructure.


• Competency with hydrologic and hydraulic modelling software (e.g., HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, PCSWMM)


• Competency with GIS and CAD software platforms.


• Competency with GoldSim Monte Carlo Simulation software would be advantageous.


• Competency in a programming language (e.g. Python, R, C) would be advantageous.


• Membership of a relevant professional organisation.
