Watchkeeping Maritime Data Technician

Navy Digital Operations Centre (NDOC) Navy Command (NC)

Background:

Permanent, fulltime role, shift watchkeeper in an expanding team that will provide 24/7/365 cover. An option to enrol on a Level 3 Data Technician apprenticeship available, providing a platform for progression in Data Analysis.

In this role you will provide data management support to the NDOC, using multiple information systems that collectively contribute to the better understanding of the Maritime Domain and situational awareness. Located in a military facility in the Portsmouth area, successful applicants will play a key role in an expanding team that manages digital data, providing outputs to customers globally.

The primary purpose is to be responsible for compiling, monitoring, and assuring the Recognised Maritime Picture (RMP). This is a complex process which requires a unique skillset to effectively understand the operational environment, providing maritime situational awareness which can be exploited throughout the maritime command chain. This will include, but is not limited to,

  • Source and explore the relevance of data from multiple sources.
  • Blending data from various trusted sources in a secure manner.
  • Collate and format data to facilitate processing and presentation for review and analysis.
  • Validate results of analysis using various techniques, e.g. cross checking, to identify faults
  • Store, manage and share data securely in a compliant manner
  • Collaborate with people both internally and externally at all levels with a view to creating value from data

Other tasking may include:

  • Simultaneously operating multiple Information systems
  • Communicating with customers via chat rooms, email, and voice.

Person Specifications

Essential Skills

  • An ability to obtain UK National Security Vetting, Developed Vetting (DV) status.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A proactive attitude and inquisitive nature, with a record of accomplishment of problem solving and meeting targets.
  • An ability to follow laid down procedures and work calmly under pressure.
  • Minimum level 2 qualifications in English and maths.

Desirable Skills

  • Maritime operational experience.
  • RMP management experience including working knowledge of the Electromagnetic Spectrum/ELINT /IBS
  • Familiar with RN MDA Programme data analytic tools.
  • Familiar with RN and Coalition C2 systems.
  • Experience of working set shift patterns and unsociable hours.

Shift Pattern

Successful applicants will be put into a set shift rota with limited flexibility. Leave is allocated over set periods and there is limited scope for change. The shifts follow the below pattern and are for a period of 12 hours each shift:

  • 7 nights on shift (1900hr - 0700hr)
  • 7 days of operational support (standby/on call period)
  • 7 days on shift (0700hr - 1900hr)
  • 14 days leave

Contract Information:

  • This contract will be permanent and on a PAYE basis.
  • Salary dependant on experience and interview.
  • Base location will be Naval HQ site- Portsdown Technology Park
  • Start date - ASAP
