Your main work area will be to develop and progress the Hazardous Waste (HW) regulatory reform associated with the Waste Tracking Service (WTS). It is an exciting role which will truly make a difference!

The Hazardous Waste Regulatory Reform Project Lead will play a pivotal role in navigating complex regulatory landscapes, implementing reforms, and driving the reform project to successful completion. Your expertise will be highly beneficial and significantly contribute to successful implementation of the reform.

You will:

Coordinate and collate input from EA HW teams in relation to regulatory and policy requirements of the regime to:

  • Provide technical input to the EA Waste Tracking team.
  • Advise the Defra digital team on the development and design of the Waste Tracking Service using your. technical expertise to ensure the service meets the business needs.
  • Provide technical insight/feedback into Defra Policy discussions to ensure the regulatory requirements of the Hazardous Waste Regime are built into the Waste Tracking Service.
  • Engage with the devolved nations around Waste Tracking Service requirements.


In addition you will:

Provide leadership on future Hazardous Waste charging proposals and consultation, advising on technical elements and links to waste tracking.

Support wider regulatory reform associated with the Hazardous Waste Regulations.

You will also play an integral part of the Hazardous Waste team, supporting and contributing to our wider team remit.

The team

The Environment & Business (E&B) Hazardous Waste team is a small high performing team, part of the Regime Regulation team within E&B Waste Regulation.

We lead the business on hazardous waste, supporting Government, industry and colleagues to ensure that hazardous waste is managed correctly.

In E&B we promote a positive, inclusive, and supportive culture where everyone feels valued. We use evidence, expertise, engagement, and innovation to support delivery, influence policy, legislation, and secure resources.

You’ll have a range of development opportunities and appropriate training will be provided.

You’ll have an EA Office base location, as a national role the working location is flexible / hybrid.

We use smart tools to stay connected and reduce travel, some travel and overnights may be required.
