This is an exciting opportunity providing support to the Hazardous Waste team on the day-to-day activities of the regime. This work sits alongside work on regulatory reform and is also likely to have a role in helping the team to transition the regime from reform to ‘business as usual’.

The role duties and responsibilities are:

  • Waste classification technical support.
  • Technical support for Hazardous Waste compliance and internally driven initiatives to improve compliance.
  • Technical support of priority waste streams.
  • Technical support for focus on priority waste streams and upstream driven both by area teams and national teams.
  • Support tackling regulatory challenges, secure long-term improvements in the regulatory regime and support Defra with Hazardous Waste circular economy work. Work resulting from Hazardous Waste evaluation in 24/25.
  • Hazardous Waste enforcement focus supporting actions identified in the control strategy to reduce offending.


The team

The Environment & Business (E&B) Hazardous Waste team is a small high performing team, part of the Regime Regulation team within E&B Waste Regulation.

We lead the business on hazardous waste, supporting Government, industry and colleagues to ensure that Hazardous waste is correctly managed.

In E&B we promote a positive, inclusive, and supportive culture where everyone feels valued. We use evidence, expertise, engagement, and innovation to support delivery, influence policy, legislation, and secure resources.

Experience/skills Required

You’ll have a range of development opportunities and appropriate training will be provided.

Contact and additional information

You’ll have an inclusive incident management objective in your development plan. We’ll help you find a role to suit your needs. Appropriate training will be given.

You’ll have an EA Office base location, as a national role the working location is flexible / hybrid.

We use smart tools to stay connected and reduce travel, some travel and overnights may be required.
