Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Sister/Charge Nurse to join our Gastroenterology department on a permanent full time basis!

The post holder is designated to take charge regularly of Ward 3D in the absence of the Ward Manager. You will be expected to lead a team of staff at Band 5 and below and set and maintain delivery of quality care. An awareness of the Clinical Governance Agenda is essential. The post holder will have responsibility for the development, implementation and evaluation of care plans and will ensure optimal standards of care by acting as a role model. The post holder will be expected to take the lead for the training and development of all staff on the ward with support from the ward manager.

Responsibilities
  • To act as clinical expert for nursing issues
  • To supervise junior staff in the delivery of safe competent care
  • Take appropriate action to address any issues or risk
  • Promote a patient focused multi-disciplinary approach to holistic care in collaboration with carers, health care professionals and other AHPs
  • Ensure a safe and timely discharge / transfer of patients
  • Ensure that treatment prescribed by the medical team are carried out and that changes in patient condition are escalated as appropriate
  • Act as advocate for the patient, respecting dignity, wishes and beliefs
  • To contribute to supporting the unit manager and deputy unit manager in their duties
  • To assess care needs, develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care

Clinical Management
  • Provide senior nursing advice and support to facilitate high quality, individualised care to patients/carers in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team

Budget and Resources
  • Ensure effective use of resources including stock management and equipment care
  • Handle patients' valuables with safe storage and transport
  • Authorize timesheets for temporary nursing and support staff as appropriate
Research and Audit
  • Develop and implement auditing methods for nursing practice
  • Promote awareness of current nursing research
  • Introduce and apply research findings to nursing practice where relevant
  • Promote and disseminate research findings to the ward
  • Identify areas for local audit, conduct and analyse data with support
  • Arrange collection and analysis of audit and research data as required
  • Participate in data collection for audit and research as required
  • Use data to contribute to improvements in patient care
Personal Development
  • Ensure ongoing continuing professional development and identify development needs within the Trust process
  • Identify self-development areas and training requirements in personal development planning
  • Maintain a professional portfolio and reflective diary for CPD and revalidation
