Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic individual to join our team as the Band 7 Ward Manager on Toni & Guy Ward at Kings College Hospital. We are looking for a dynamic Ward Manager to lead our team of both skilled and more junior nurses.

You must be a Registered Children's Nurse with excellent clinical skills, self-motivated, enthusiastic and committed to providing high standards of care for all our paediatric patients, their families and carers. The ability to demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential. You will be an experienced Paediatric Nurse and have a proven track record of being able to provide leadership to ensure the highest possible standards, supported by a team of peer Matrons, Lead Nurse and Head of Nursing.

To be eligible for this post you must be a registered nurse with clinical experience within a children's ward, worked in the capacity of a band 6 nurse and must hold a mentorship qualification (ENB 998 or equivalent).

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Clinical Practice

To have advanced holistic patient assessment skills (i.e., history taking and physical examination skills) so that clinical decision-making leads to prompt and appropriate action in the best interests of the patients' well-being. Good verbal and written communication skills are essential for ensuring that professional advice, care guidance, and instructions are well understood by patients, their relatives, and the multidisciplinary team. Ensures continuity of patient care through effective staff deployment. Ensures good discharge planning to meet individual patient needs with appropriate plans involving the multi-professional team. Regularly reviews patient care documentation to ensure all aspects of care are considered, needs are identified, and care plans are appropriate. Works in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and Trust policies and procedures. Communicates effectively with patients, carers, colleagues, and students. Works effectively as part of the multi-disciplinary team. Keeps up-to-date with current trends and developments in the clinical specialty. Acts as an effective role model demonstrating nursing knowledge and skills, advising and supporting team members. Facilitates professional development of nurses. Ensures dissemination of information regarding Trust and NHS initiatives, supporting staff discussions and feedback. Complies with the Trust's Equality and Diversity Policy, supporting race equality and opportunities for disabled people, ensuring services are responsive to diverse needs. Has full knowledge of the Trust Major Incident Plan and the role within it. Is aware of safeguarding policies and procedures and demonstrates the ability to raise concerns and collaborate with other agencies to protect children.

2. Education and Research

Collaborates with the Practice Development Nurse to ensure staff receive appropriate education and development. Manages ward/departments' education and training budgets in line with Trust needs and objectives. Ensures a high-quality clinical learning environment supporting nursing students and ongoing professional development. Participates in research studies, keeping the relevant authorities informed of progress within the ward/department.
