Job summary

Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced Ward Manager for Nidderdale, a busy 30-bedded surgical ward. You will lead and develop the nursing and support team, ensures high standards of patient care, and act as a clinical leader driving change and improvements.

The role demands strong communication, robust clinical governance and effective collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to optimise patient flow and outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Provide overall leadership and management of the Surgical ward, ensuring safe, high quality, patient-centred care.
• Maintain 24-hour accountability for clinical standards, patient safety, and patient experience.
• Lead, manage and develop the nursing and support workforce, ensuring staffing levels, skill mix and safe rosters.
• Act as a visible clinical leader and role model, promoting professional standards and ward culture.
• Oversee patient flow, including admissions, transfers and discharges, to support capacity management and reduce length of stay.
• Monitor and manage the ward budget, including staffing expenditure and resource use.
• Lead on quality assurance, including audits, CQC standards, and compliance with policies.
• Analyse quality and performance data (incidents, complaints, falls, ulcers) and implement improvements.
• Ensure robust clinical governance systems, including risk management and incident learning.
• Lead investigations into incidents, complaints and safeguarding, ensuring timely resolution.
• Promote infection prevention and control standards and policy adherence.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary team to ensure coordinated, effective care delivery.

Nidderdale is a busy 30-bedded multi specuiality, for patients with various and at times complex conditions and has a high number of admissions, transfers and discharges each day. The team works closely with all other members of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure the patient is cared for in a holistic manner throughout their inpatient stay and that the patient is safely transferred or discharged at the earliest opportunity.

We are looking to recruit an experienced, highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to lead and develop the team. You will be a driver for providing high quality care for our patients, bringing innovative ideas for change and improvement.

You will need excellent communication skills and high clinical standards with a passion to make a difference for patients and staff alike. This is a demanding role that requires commitment and a positive approach towards change.

• Ensure robust clinical governance systems are in place, including risk management, incident reporting, and learning from events.
• Lead investigations into incidents, complaints, and safeguarding concerns, ensuring timely and effective resolution.
• Promote and ensure compliance with infection prevention and control standards.
• Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure coordinated, effective care delivery.
