Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Division of Medicine on the Acute Frailty Unit for a dedicated, enthusiastic, highly motivated, and experienced nurse to join our dynamic, patient-focused team as a permanent Ward Manager.

The Acute Frailty Unit includes 25 assessment beds and one SDEC bay. The successful candidate will also manage the Older Person Rapid Access Clinic (OPRA), which operates Monday to Friday. The ideal candidate will confidently and supportively lead the team, share our passion for delivering the highest quality care, provide an excellent patient experience, and be committed to continuous improvement.

The role is pivotal in providing the clinical expertise necessary to ensure safe and effective inpatient care to the highest standards. You must demonstrate good enquiry skills, excellent communication and organisational abilities, along with strong knowledge and understanding of clinical governance and current NHS issues.

Main duties include:
  1. Day-to-day management of the ward, coordinating, allocating, and prioritising workload to ensure staff and resources are used efficiently, and contributing to the smooth running of the ward.
  2. Training, supervision, and appraisal of team members.
  3. Ensuring safe staffing levels, producing a fair and effective roster, and managing sickness and absence in line with the trust's attendance policies.
  4. Maintaining and monitoring systems for staff compliance with mandatory training.
  5. Collaborating with all members of the wider team to ensure efficient ward operation and a safe patient journey.
  6. Overseeing the ward budget, monitoring, and controlling expenditure and resource use.
  7. Line management responsibilities, including disciplinary, grievances, and relevant meetings.

Essential requirements include a minimum of 5 years post-registration experience and at least 2 years of leadership experience or equivalent.
