Job summary

Brainkind is seeking a Ward Manager to lead the Neurological Centre York, overseeing a dedicated nursing team delivering safe, effective and person-centred care to people with acquired brain injuries and complex neurological needs.

You will combine hands-on clinical leadership with people management, governance and operational responsibilities, shaping high-quality care and a positive clinical culture within a modern specialist environment.

Qualifications

• Current NMC registration as a Registered Nurse.
• Experience at Ward Manager/Deputy Ward Manager/Clinical Lead or equivalent level.
• Strong clinical leadership experience in healthcare or specialist care.
• Experience developing nursing and multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong understanding of governance, safeguarding, risk management and safe clinical practice.
• Experience supporting people with complex neurological, behavioural, rehabilitation or mental health needs.
• Ability to lead through challenge and maintain high clinical standards.
• Strong communication with families and professionals.

Responsibilities

• Provide day-to-day clinical and operational leadership for the ward, maintaining safe, effective and high-quality standards of care.
• Lead, motivate and develop the nursing and care team, creating a positive, accountable and supportive clinical culture.
• Provide expert clinical leadership and act as a model for evidence-based, person-centred practice.
• Oversee the delivery of care for people with complex neurological, behavioural and rehabilitation needs.
• Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to coordinate admissions and discharge planning.
• Maintain standards across governance, safeguarding, risk management, quality and patient safety.
• Ensure appropriate staffing levels and manage rotas, sickness, annual leave, recruitment and retention.
• Provide supervision, mentorship, preceptorship and professional development for nursing colleagues.
• Support newly qualified nurses and students to develop clinical confidence and capability.
• Identify opportunities to improve quality, outcomes and the experience of the people we support.
• Build positive relationships with families, carers, professionals and external stakeholders.
• Support budget management and contribute to service development.

Ward Manager – Specialist Neurorehabilitation

Salary: £54,327 per annum

Hours: 35 hours per week

Are you an experienced Ward Manager, Clinical Lead, Deputy Ward Manager or senior Registered Nurse ready to take the next step in clinical leadership?

Brainkind is looking for an experienced and compassionate Ward Manager to lead a dedicated nursing team at our Neurological Centre in York, supporting people living with acquired brain injuries and complex neurological needs.

This is a key clinical leadership position combining hands-on nursing leadership, people management, quality and governance, and operational responsibility. You will have the autonomy to lead your ward, develop your team and ensure the people we support receive safe, effective and genuinely person-centred care.

About our York service

Brainkind Neurological Centre York provides specialist support for people living with acquired brain injury and complex neurological needs.

The people we support may experience a combination of cognitive, physical, behavioural and emotional difficulties, including impaired social functioning, disinhibition and behaviours that may challenge.

You will work alongside an experienced multidisciplinary team within a modern specialist environment where rehabilitation, recovery, independence and quality of life are at the centre of care.

The role

As Ward Manager, you will take responsibility for the clinical and operational leadership of the ward, ensuring consistently high standards of nursing care and providing visible leadership to the nursing and care team.

You will lead from the front, combining strong clinical judgement with effective people management and creating an environment in which both colleagues and the people we support can thrive.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Providing day-to-day clinical and operational leadership for the ward, maintaining safe, effective and high-quality standards of care.
• Leading, motivating and developing the nursing and care team, creating a positive, accountable and supportive clinical culture.

About you

We are looking for a credible and confident clinical leader who can combine excellent nursing practice with strong team leadership.

You will ideally have:

• Current NMC registration as a Registered Nurse.
• Experience working at Ward Manager, Deputy Ward Manager, Clinical Lead, Senior Nurse or equivalent level.
• Strong clinical leadership experience within a healthcare or specialist care environment.
• Experience managing and developing nursing and/or multidisciplinary care teams.
• A strong understanding of clinical governance, safeguarding, risk management and safe clinical practice.
• Experience supporting people with complex clinical, neurological, behavioural, rehabilitation or mental health needs.
• The ability to lead through challenge, maintain high clinical standards and build an engaged and accountable team.
• Strong communication skills and the confidence to work collaboratively with families, multidisciplinary professionals and external stakeholders.

Previous neurorehabilitation or acquired brain injury experience would be highly advantageous, but we also welcome applications from experienced clinical leaders with relevant transferable experience from other complex healthcare settings.

This could be an excellent next step for an established Ward Manager or an experienced Deputy Ward Manager or Clinical Lead who is ready to progress into a broader leadership position.
