Job description

Job Summary

The Post-holder will be responsible for the Operational and Clinical Nurse Management of the ward within our regional Medium Secure Unit. This will include managing the daily functioning of the ward, responsibility for all staff management, resource allocation, modernisation and development of the workforce and services and overseeing patient referrals, assessments and care and will:
  1. Participate in the Nurse on-call rota for the secure services. To deputise in the absence of the Lead Nurse.
  2. Be operationally manage the ward and to lead, co-ordinate and contribute to the delivery of Medium Secure services on an operational basis via the nursing team, ensuring holistic delivery of care and multi-disciplinary/multi-agency services, which are coherent, consistently applied and in line with Operational Policies and best practice.
  3. Responsibily to assess and make recommendations to the Responsible Clinician/Clinical Team on the suitability of patients for admission to the Medium Secure Unit.
  4. Responsible for providing forensic mental health nursing advice and support to other mental health settings across the service group and throughout South Wales.
  5. Provide ward management and nursing leadership to an allocated ward and routinely monitor occupancy, dependency and observation levels on the ward to ensure that these are managed within the available resources.

Main duties of the job
  1. Work autonomously to plan own work schedule plans, in view of daily and weekly management responsibilities along with leadership and supervisory aspects of the role. Supervise the professional and clinical work of nursing staff within the clinical area allocating work effectively, considering skill and competency of staff and patient requirement and delegate the delivery of care where appropriate, in line with NHS Wales' delegation framework ensuring staff are using evidence-based practice.
  2. Manage and ensure the well-being of staff through effective appraisal, roster management recruitment and selection, fair and compassionate staff management (in line with all HB workforce policies) and the supervision of learners.
  3. Utilise resources effectively ensuring the planned nurse staffing levels are rostered and all reasonable steps are taken to maintain them for the ward/unit over the 24-hour period.
  4. Take responsibility for the collection and collation of accurate and timely data and information for a range of purposes including informing nurse staffing level review, audit, research and service performance measurement in order to share examples of good practice and action areas requiring improvement.
  5. Be responsible for the development of evidence-based policies, procedures and protocols for the ward/unit ensuring that they meet national, local and professional criteria, gaining SBUHB approval/ratification prior to use where appropriate.
