We are seeking an enthusiastic, experienced, and organised midwife to join our dedicated team as the Vulnerable Women Lead Midwife at UCLH.

This fixed-term role is a unique opportunity to make a lasting impact on the care of vulnerable women by managing her own caseload of patients and lead the expansion of Tulip Team—a specialist group of Band 6 midwives providing enhanced antenatal and occasional intrapartum care to women who meet our safeguarding criteria.

You will play a central role in the development, management, and daily leadership of this essential service, working closely with the wider safeguarding team to ensure high-quality, compassionate care. Your leadership will be crucial in promoting safe, effective clinical practice, building strong team dynamics, and delivering a consistently excellent patient experience.

This part time role anticipates working hours across 4 days a week, Mon-Fri but can be discussed further on a case by case basis.

Main duties of the job

The Vulnerable Women Lead Midwife provides clinical leadership to the Tulip Team, supporting the delivery of high-quality, woman-centred safeguarding care. Working closely with the Specialist Midwives and corporate safeguarding team, the postholder will act as a clinical role model, maintain NMC standards, and ensure safe, evidence-based practice. Key duties include caseload oversight, managing complex care needs, ensuring effective staff deployment, and supporting multi-disciplinary collaboration. The role involves supervising clinical staff, supporting CPD, delivering safeguarding training, and promoting a safe, inclusive learning environment. The postholder leads on clinical risk management, governance audits, and incident reporting, supporting service improvements and the Trust’s safeguarding responsibilities. Strong leadership, communication, and organisational skills are essential, as is the ability to manage staff rosters, sickness, appraisals, and recruitment. The Lead Midwife contributes to local and Trust-wide initiatives, ensures compliance with safety policies, and fosters strong interdepartmental relationships to enhance service delivery for vulnerable women under UCLH’s care.

  • Registered Midwife
  • Educated to Degree level or equivalent

Experience
  • Significant midwifery experience in all areas of midwifery
  • Up to date knowledge and understanding of the key issues facing the NHS with regards to children’s safeguarding and wider social issues
  • Experience of teaching and mentoring more junior staff and/or SSSA
  • Recent experience in the field of children’s safeguarding and caring for vulnerable patients with complex needs
  • Ability to build professional relationships and rapport with staff of all levels
