Summary

***INTERNAL APPLICANTS ONLY PLEASE***

Being a Volunteering and Community Officer involves connecting with people, helping everyone get involved, and making them feel welcome at National Trust places. You will work with volunteers and local communities, contributing to the Trust’s mission of protecting and caring for places so that people and nature can thrive now and in the future.

This role may include managing volunteers, and you should be willing to work some weekends and evenings.

What it's like to work here

Reporting to the General Manager, this is primarily a desk-based role, but you'll work in some of the most beautiful settings during an exciting time for our places, with great colleagues.

The South Lakes portfolio includes Hilltop, Wray Estate, Steam Yacht Gondola, and a wider countryside estate featuring iconic Lake District landscapes like Tarn Hows, Claife, and Little Langdale.

Our locations are somewhat remote, so consider your transportation options before applying. You will support colleagues across all teams within the portfolio.

We are a busy team with major projects underway to refurbish and enhance visitor experiences at Hilltop and Wray. Our team is passionate about delivering excellence and memorable visits for our visitors.

What you'll be doing

You will collaborate across departments to implement the Volunteering and Community plan, providing administrative, communication, and event support aligned with priorities.

You will work with teams in programming, curation, gardens, estates, and visitor experience, supporting Volunteer Managers to ensure volunteers have a positive experience. Additionally, you'll assist the General Manager with stakeholder mapping and engagement with the four Parish Councils in the portfolio.

Who we're looking for

We'd love to hear from you if you are:

  • Enthusiastic and knowledgeable about volunteering benefits
  • Passionate about working with volunteers, understanding legal distinctions between staff and volunteers
  • Excellent at communicating with people from diverse backgrounds and committed to customer service
  • Flexible, collaborative, and a team player willing to lead or support as needed
  • Organized with great attention to detail
  • Experienced in volunteering principles and practices
  • Proficient with IT (Microsoft Office) and managing budgets

The package

The National Trust values diversity and strives to create an inclusive culture where everyone feels they belong. We aim to reflect the communities we serve and welcome everyone into our teams.

Benefits include:

  • Substantial pension scheme up to 10% of basic salary
  • Free entry to National Trust places for you, a guest, and your children (under 18)
  • Season ticket loan
  • EV car lease scheme
  • Perks at work discounts (gym memberships, shopping, cinema)
  • Holiday entitlement up to 32 days, with purchase scheme options, subject to criteria
