Job description

Our volunteer social media editors inspire people to act for butterflies and moths.

At Butterfly Conservation, we want to create a world where butterflies and moths are enjoyed by everyone, forever. We rely on social media to educate people about these beautiful creatures and how they can help them. Having a presence on social media is very important to us and a key way for us to achieve our goals.

In this role, you will work with Butterfly Conservation’s Communication Team and local volunteers. You will learn about butterflies and moths and develop social media skills in a working environment. We'd love to hear from you if you enjoy using social media, have good IT skills and are able to volunteer from home.

Why We Want You

To promote Butterfly Conservation’s national campaigns by managing Butterfly Conservation's social media accounts and working with the Communications Team to co-ordinate publicity.

What You Will Be Doing
  • Post regularly on BC social media about local butterflies, moths, national projects or calls to action.
  • Reply to queries and comments raised via social media, share relevant posts and/or photos.
  • Support the Communications Team in the promotion of national campaigns such as Wild Spaces, Big Butterfly Count and Moth Night.
  • There are additional opportunities to get involved in the following, if desired:
  • Review and analyse data about your social media posts so you can increase the number of people engaging through the channel in the future.
The Skills You Need
  • Use social media yourself and be familiar with the style and type of content which is suited to social media.
  • Able to get a key message across in a few sentences, using images to capture attention.
  • You will enjoy being creative about how you communicate with people.
  • Able to understand statistics on engagement through various social media channels, or willing to learn how to.
  • If you can identify common butterflies that’s a bonus, but you’ll have support from other experts if you are not so confident at this.
  • You will need access to the internet for this role.

Disclaimer

This role is active throughout the year, though our social media accounts are often more active in the summer months. The role can be carried out on any day of the week and at any time, though it works best when you can offer small amounts of regular engagement (e.g. regular posts and a daily check-in to each account). We ask you to commit a minimum of 1 hour a week. The role is typically fulfilled in under 3 hours a week. You will be asked to complete training when you start in the role and may be asked to attend other sessions as and when required. If you are aged 16 or 17, your parent may give written permission for you to volunteer without adult supervision. Please be aware that our insurance cover differs slightly for people aged 75 or over.
