What are we looking for?
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
  • A degree in Journalism, Media Studies, social media, or related fields such as health, development, SDGs, aid, sports, fashion, or broadcasting, and proficiency in English or a related language.
  • A postgraduate qualification in journalism or broadcast journalism is an advantage.
  • A Diploma or National Qualification in Journalism is welcome.
  • Professional accreditations from organizations like NCTJ or Broadcast Journalism Training Council are a plus.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • A keen interest in news, current affairs, health, business, and people.
  • Excellent spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to work under pressure with tight deadlines.
  • Ability to understand complex issues quickly and explain them simply.
  • Resilience, determination, flexibility, persistence, motivation, and integrity.
Work Experience
  • At least three (3) years of relevant work experience.
  • A professional portfolio of published work.
  • Experience writing for various publications, especially with a byline.
Languages

Proficiency in one of Africa's widely spoken languages (e.g., Afrikaans, Amharic, Arabic, etc.) is an advantage but not mandatory.

What will you be doing?

The Africa Health Organisation (AHO) celebrates its 25th anniversary on 14 August 2025. We seek inspiring freelance journalists to join us in celebrating this milestone by reporting on health, medical issues, and socioeconomic determinants of health in Africa and the Diaspora. Your responsibilities will include researching and publishing health stories, interviewing stakeholders, covering events, reacting to breaking news, and creating engaging content for our website and online platforms.

As a volunteer, your duties include:

  • Researching and reporting health-related stories.
  • Interviewing health professionals, politicians, and community members.
  • Covering health events and conferences.
  • Producing concise, accurate, and timely articles.
  • Engaging in real-time reporting during significant events.

Note: Volunteering is unpaid. This role offers valuable experience for future employment opportunities.
