Job description

Role Description: Volunteer Independent Examiner (Accounts)

Organisation: Untapped Art Therapy Charity (Untapped (UK) CIO)
Location: Remote / Christchurch, Dorset
Time Commitment: Approximately 10–15 hours annually, with some flexibility around year-end
Reporting to: Board of Trustees

About Untapped Art Therapy:

Untapped Art Therapy is a registered charity based in Christchurch, Dorset. We provide Art Psychotherapy to vulnerable children and young people across Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole. Our mission is to prevent youth suicide and self-harm by bridging the gap between what families can afford and what the NHS can provide. We offer trauma-informed, creative mental health support for those who might otherwise fall through the cracks.

Role Purpose:

To independently examine the charity’s annual accounts and provide a formal statement of assurance in line with Charity Commission guidance, ensuring financial transparency and compliance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Examine the charity’s accounting records and annual accounts to ensure they are consistent, accurate, and properly maintained.
  • Confirm that the accounts comply with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011, using the appropriate basis (Receipts & Payments or Accruals).
  • Produce and sign the Independent Examiner’s Report required by the Charity Commission (CC32 guidance).
  • Liaise with the Treasurer and Trustees to clarify any queries or discrepancies during the review process.
  • Uphold independence, objectivity, and confidentiality at all times.

Essential Criteria:

  • Financial competence (e.g. bookkeeper, accountant, finance officer, or equivalent experience).
  • Understanding of charity accounting and familiarity with Charity Commission guidance on independent examination.
  • Not a trustee or involved in the charity’s financial management or decision-making.
  • Commitment to impartiality, accuracy, and confidentiality.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience working with small charities or in the voluntary sector.
  • Understanding of trauma-informed or youth mental health services.
  • Familiarity with Receipts & Payments accounts or charity accounting software.

This is a voluntary position, offering a meaningful opportunity to support the sustainability and impact of a vital mental health service for local children and young people.
