Job summary

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust seeks a Whole-Time Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist with a subspecialty in Vitreoretinal Surgery for Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield. This 12-month fixed-term post starts December 2026 and includes on-call duties and cataract surgery contributions.

The successful candidate must be GMC-registered with licence to practise, and hold FRCOphth or equivalent, with VR fellowship experience and a commitment to training and service development.

Qualifications

• GMC registration with licence to practise.
• FRCOphth or equivalent ophthalmology qualification.
• MD or PhD or equivalent.
• Specialist register in relevant specialty or within 6 months of interview.

Responsibilities

• Provide a comprehensive, modern ophthalmology service with a major VR component.
• Share VR emergency cover and cover for colleagues during absences.
• Train junior ophthalmologists and develop medical students and allied staff.
• Be flexible to work at any site within Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
