Job summary

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Whole-Time Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist with a subspecialty interest in Vitreoretinal Surgery. Post is fixed-term for 12 months, starting December 2026, based at Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

The role includes VR service leadership, training, and on-call duties across Trust sites. The successful candidate will participate in cataract surgery delivery at NGEC and may work flexibly across Trust sites.

Qualifications

• GMC registration with licence to practise.
• FRCOphth or equivalent ophthalmology qualification.
• Minimum 12 months post-CCT Vitreoretinal fellowship.
• Competence in contemporary VR surgical management.
• Willingness to teach and supervise trainees.

Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive ophthalmology services with a major VR subspecialty focus.
• Share on-call duties and cover for colleagues when required.
• Contribute to cataract surgery delivery at NGEC.
• Support training of junior Ophthalmologists and medical students.
