Job description

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

The New York Times is looking for a graphics journalist based in London who can help expand our visual coverage of Europe, the Middle East and Africa. This person will report and help execute news graphics and multimedia features using data, imagery, mapping and other forms of visual storytelling.

You will join a group of graphics reporters and editors on the International desk, including an expanding team of visual journalists in London.

We want to do more of these kinds of stories.

Your work will include a mix of news coverage and longer-term enterprise. You will report and visualize your own stories in addition to working to shape our most critical international storylines as a critical part of multidisciplinary teams of reporters, designers, photo editors and video journalists. And you will work with on-the-ground correspondents to hold governments accountable and help readers better understand the world.

This is a hybrid position based in London and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Regularly stay on top of key news related to your beat
  • Find and vet datasets, maps, photos and other information that can be the source for graphics and multimedia stories.
  • Work with multidisciplinary teams, including graphics, photo and video teams in New York and around the world, to build and shape projects across formats.
  • Work with editors and correspondents throughout Europe and the Middle East to conceive ambitious projects.
  • Collaborate with editors and correspondents to produce successful visual formats so they become a more regular part of the report.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • This role reports to the Senior Editor, Visuals in London and collaborates closely with the Europe Editor in London.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Strong news and editorial judgment.
  • Record of designing and making high-level interactive graphics or stories.
  • Ability to write clearly, work on tight deadlines and sharpen the relationship between images and copy.
  • Strength working collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.
  • A record of coming up with creative ways to report and execute stories.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate the purpose of each story.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule as news demands.
  • Ability to make quick decisions under deadlines and a high-pressure news environment.
  • A passion for news.
