Job description

At Wentworth Castle Gardens, we’re seeing more visitors every year and want to ensure that all of them have the best possible experience. In this role, you’ll collaborate with others to ensure we’re keeping visitors at the heart of our operations through improving presentation on site, developing joined-up programming and interpretation, and communicating about our work and visitor offer to a range of audiences.

Interview date:Thursday 22nd May

What it's like to work here

Wentworth Castle Gardens is one of the country's greatest 18th century landscapes: a place of beauty and peace, rich in history and stories. Since 2019, we’ve been working with Barnsley Museums and Northern College to create a place which offers opportunities for everyone to get involved, and which actively benefits our local communities.

This is an exciting opportunity to help us develop the quality and content of our visitor experience, both on site and online. We want to be responsive to local audience feedback, break down barriers to access, and explore how Wentworth Castle Gardens can be relevant to the lives of more people. You’ll work closely with all departments and report to the Visitor Operations & Experience Manager.

We want you to learn and develop your career while you’re with us. We’ll work with you to identify the training and support that you need to achieve your goals.

What you'll be doing

As Visitor Experience Officer, you’ll support all teams to develop innovative ways of presenting and communicating the stories and ongoing work at Wentworth Castle Gardens. You will enable a broad range of visitors to have outstanding and inspirational experiences by supporting and delivering high standards of visitor engagement and interpretation at the property, and through reviewing service regularly. Working with partners, volunteers and community groups, you’ll co-create engaging programming, including a year-round visitor offer. You will also ensure that our communications with visitors – from the first click on the website, to signs around the property – are clear, engaging and consistent. There will be delegated tasks in marketing and communications, including creating copy for our social media channels and property website, as well as helping to communicate messages internally to staff and volunteers across the site.

Who we're looking for

We'd love to hear from you if you’re:

  • skilled in organisation and planning, with a good eye for detail
  • good at talking to, and getting on with, all kinds of people
  • comfortable with IT: Microsoft Office, as well as web and social media
  • experienced in producing interpretive materials, such as displays and exhibitions, and marketing or promotional materials
  • flexible, with a visitor-first approach, high standards of customer service and an eye for detail
  • happy working with and supervising volunteers
  • experienced in visitor operations, ideally in the heritage, culture, arts, natural environment, sport or visitor attraction sector

The package

The National Trust has the motto ‘For everyone, for ever’ at its heart. We’re working hard to create an inclusive culture, where everyone feels they belong. It’s important that our people reflect and represent the diversity of the communities and audiences we serve. We welcome and value difference, so when we say we’re for everyone, we want everyone to be welcome in our teams too.
