Position Summary
The primary location of this position is the main campus in Cullowhee.

Western Carolina University School of Music seeks a dynamic teacher and accomplished flutist for a one-year position fixed term position at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor of Music - Flute. We seek an engaging and accomplished flutist whose work will model the depth and breadth of musical experiences available to our students in an ever-evolving arts landscape. Anticipated begin work date is August 2025.
Western North Carolina is a region rich in the arts, and WCU's David Orr Belcher College of Fine and Performing Arts brings together the traditions and resources of the region with the talent of our students to serve as the heart of art and culture in WNC. The Belcher College of combines training with performance, community engagement and business and entrepreneurship skills to prepare young musicians, actors, writers, film makers, directors, visual artists, and designers for diverse careers in the art, film and performance industries. The WCU School of Music faculty and students perform 150-200 concerts and recitals each year on Western's campus and on tours throughout the region and nation. Our student performing ensembles include traditional and innovative performance opportunities including bands, choirs, chamber music, and a wide variety of technology-enhanced ensembles exploring jazz, commercial, and experimental styles. The School of Music offers degree programs in Performance, Music Education, Commercial Music and Audio Production, and Music in the Liberal Arts that are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).

Responsibilities

  • This position requires the ability to recruit and retain a flute studio of the highest quality.

  • Primary teaching duties will include weekly lessons for flute majors and minors in all degree programs, weekly studio class, and chamber music coaching.

  • Additional teaching duties will complement the School of Music's curricular offerings, possibly including courses in core musicianship, music technology, or music education methods, depending on the candidate's interests and qualifications.

  • Additional responsibilities will include service to the school, college, and university, including student advising and committee work.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Master of Music degree in flute performance or a closely-related field.

  • A record of demonstrated excellence in flute teaching and performance indicative of the capacity to excel in fulfillment of the above responsibilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A completed DMA or PhD in Music in hand at the time of application.

  • At least two years of postsecondary/collegiate teaching experience in applied flute.
