Job description

Abbey House Vets is seeking an experienced and dedicated Patient Care Assistant to join their night team. This role offers an opportunity to enhance your veterinary patient care skills.

You will be part of a fully staffed night team, including 1 veterinary surgeon, 1 Registered Veterinary Nurse on duty throughout the night, along with support from student nurses and other Patient Care Assistants during peak times. You will receive support from a dedicated buddy and regular check-ins with your line manager.

The ideal candidate should have experience working night shifts or part-night shifts, or previous animal/veterinary experience.

Your responsibilities during the night will include supporting reception during busy periods, dispensing medication, walking and recording vital parameters of inpatients (with Vet Nurse support), preparing for surgeries, and maintaining high infection control standards.

The rota is 7 days on (from 7 pm to 8 am) followed by 14 days off, starting on a Monday.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Assist with patient handling and restraint, ensuring a patient-friendly approach to minimize stress and discomfort.
  • Handle medications and prepare them for dispensing.
  • Prepare and maintain patient accommodation, considering their condition, welfare, environmental enrichment, and supporting aids.
  • Clean and disinfect patient areas and other practice areas.
  • Provide in-patient care, including exercising, feeding, and grooming hospitalized patients.
  • Clean, package, and sterilize sterile supplies.
  • Support veterinary surgeons, nurses, reception staff, and other team members as needed.
