A bit about us

Do you want to create a better world for animals? At the RSPCA, we believe all animals deserve kindness and respect. We work for the benefit of every animal – including pets, farmed animals, wildlife, and animals used in science. Choose a career with us and make a difference for every kind.

We're looking for a Veterinary Care Assistant to join our veterinary team at our Greater Manchester Animal Hospital on a full-time, permanent basis, reporting to one of our Nursing Team Leaders.

  • Working hours: 35 hours on a 24-hour rotating shift basis including evenings and weekends.
  • On-site: Your base will be at Greater Manchester Animal Hospital

Are you ready to be part of our journey and make a difference?

What a day might look like for you

We've added a short summary of a typical day; for full details, please refer to the attached job description.

Our fabulous Veterinary Care Assistants are essential for the smooth running of the hospital.

You will start with a specific area and patients to care for, which may have complex or straightforward needs. Your duties include keeping animals clean, administering medications, updating records, and being alert to concerns. You might also assist with surgical cases, preparing animals for surgery, or ensuring instruments are ready for use.

No two days are the same. New animals are brought in daily, and they are moved along their journey from rescue to rehome. Good communication skills are vital to liaise with our front-line colleagues. The role can be emotionally demanding, but the rewards of successful outcomes and making a difference are immense.

You will be part of a large team with opportunities to develop your skills in animal care.

Veterinary Care Assistants are proactive and collaborative, ensuring high standards of animal welfare and biosecurity on a 24-hour rota.

What you'll bring:

If this role interests you, we value a range of skills; don't worry if you don't meet every criterion, we'd love to hear from you.

  • Previous experience in veterinary care
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work well with veterinary teams and inspectors
  • Self-motivation and good time management
  • An NVQ Level 2 in Animal Care or equivalent (e.g., VCA, ANA) is desirable

Note: Successful candidates for certain roles will need to undergo a DBS check. Applicants must have the legal right to work in the UK; we cannot sponsor visas.

Good luck with your application!

Applications are reviewed as received, so early submission is encouraged. We cannot accept applications after the closing date.

We aim to provide a positive candidate experience. Due to high application volumes, feedback may not always be possible.

We promote diversity and encourage applications from all backgrounds, especially from minority ethnic groups and people with disabilities, to support our mission of animal welfare.

Our mission: to ensure animals have a good life through rescue, care, advocacy, and inspiring compassion and respect.
