Where you fit in

Within Shell Trading, Crude & Products Freight Trading desks manage a large fleet including Long Range, Medium Range, VLGC, Crude, Specialized, and Chemicals vessels. Our offices are located in Houston, London, Dubai, Bahamas, and Singapore.

This role is part of the Trading & Supply Crude & Product Commercial Freight Operations team, reporting to the Vessel Performance Manager. The team provides professional freight operations support to Freight Traders.

What’s the role?

The Vessel Performance Analyst will collaborate closely with Freight Traders, Freight Operations, Contract Managers, and the Vessel Performance Manager. The main goal is to deliver value for the freight trading desks through data analysis and visualization, aiding traders in making financially beneficial decisions.

Responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring real-time consumption and emissions to identify inefficiencies
  • Developing and enhancing vessel optimization tools for fleet performance and emissions data visualization
  • Creating dashboards to provide fleet performance data to Traders/Operators, including metrics like average consumption, speeds, performance comparisons, and emissions (e.g., EU ETS)
  • Supporting Freight Trading desks with best practices for running time charter fleets
  • Collaborating with Freight Operations for real-time interventions
  • Engaging with external service providers on voyage optimization and analytics
  • Providing ad-hoc commercial and contractual advice related to vessel performance clauses and exposures
  • Identifying opportunities to add commercial value and mitigate risks
  • Implementing ideas from the Shipping Value team for Oil Time Chartered Fleet
  • Assisting with data analysis and presentation for external engagements
  • Managing vessel performance claims to recover value
  • Coordinating with departments and external parties to resolve claims and disputes
  • Managing Market Related Hire processes, including declarations and invoicing

What we need from you

  • Proficiency in data analysis and visualization tools such as MS Excel, Power BI, Qlik
  • Ability to analyze data from multiple sources using analytical tools
  • Self-motivated with a willingness to learn new skills
  • Keen interest in data analytics and interpreting numerical data
  • General troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for a multinational environment
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Team player with fluency in English (spoken and written)

Good-to-have skills

  • Knowledge of shipping technologies
  • Experience with programming languages/tools like Python, SQL, Matlab, Excel VBA
  • Basic understanding of ship operations
  • Highly organized, responsible, and detail-oriented
